Camp Wraps with Win on Day 9

Finishing off spring training in style the Calgary Vipers (4-2-1) defeated the Edmonton Capitals (4-2) 7-6 at Scottsdale Stadium in Arizona. Trailing 4-1 half way through the game the Vipers rallied for six runs in the next three innings to take the lead and hang on for good.

At the plate Wilver Perez led the way with a towering home run and overall four runs batted in. Overall the Snakes collected 13 hits with Drew Miller collecting three of them to go along with two runs scored.

On the mound Dusty Gober got the start and threw three scoreless innings while inducing two double-plays. Out of the bullpen Mark Michael threw a scoreless inning with three strikeouts, J.J. Whetsel hit 95 miles per hour and tossed a scoreless and hitless inning, Ryan Torrey threw an inning without giving up an earned run, and Scott Watson tossed a scoreless frame.

Calgary grabbed the lead in the bottom of the first inning as Perez hit a solo home run for the 1-0 lead.

Edmonton responded in the fourth frame when Pete Tountas and Alex Chavez singled followed by a Enrique Cruz three run homer for a 3-1 advantage.

The Capitals added to the lead in the fifth as Lou Santangelo walked, advanced to second base on a groundout, and scored on two wild pitches for a 4-1 score.

The Vipers got that run back in the bottom of the inning when Jonny Kaplan tripled and scored on a Perez run batted in groundout for a 4-2 game.

Calgary regained the lead in the sixth frame as Drew Miller and Calgary resident Aaron Dunsmore singled, Jeff Giacomini doubled in one, Matt Kavanaugh singled in one, Kaplan walked, and Perez knocked in two with a base hit for a 6-4 lead.

Another run was added for a 7-4 advantage in the seventh when Miller doubled and scored on a Kevin Price RBI single.

Edmonton got closer in the eighth inning as Cody Nowlin reached on a fielding error, Tountas walked, and Chavez drove in two with a double for a 7-6 score.

After a day off Calgary starts the 2011 regular season on the road in Yuma, Arizona on Tuesday May 24th with a double-header against Jose Canseco and the Scorpions.

The Vipers return to Calgary and Foothills Stadium for their home opener on Thursday May 26th at 6:30 PM MDT against their Alberta rivals, the Edmonton Capitals.
