Calistri, Saint Louis Beat Roughnecks

June 9, 2018 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
FC Tulsa News Release

The Tulsa Roughnecks FC hopes of picking up its first victory of the season Saturday night at ONEOK Field were dashed in a 3-0 loss to Saint Louis FC. Former Roughnecks midfielder Joey Calistri inflicted much of the damage, collecting two of the goals and assisting on the other.

With the result, Tulsa remains winless on the season with a 0-6-7 record (7 points). It was a second straight victory for STLFC who improved to 5-4-5 (20 points).

Saint Louis FC opened the match with heavy pressure, and it paid off with the first goal of the match in the 17th minute. After the Roughnecks failed to keep possession on the high press from Saint Louis, the ball fell Calistr who delivered a cross in front of goal that connected with Kyle Greig. Greig spun and fired his shot past Fabian Cerda to give Saint Louis the lead.

Tulsa's first good chance of the match came in the 25th minute when pressure from the Roughnecks forced a turnover from STLFC. On the attack, Joaquin Rivas fed Jesus Ferreira in the middle of the penalty area, and Ferriera's low shot forced a diving save from Saint Louis goalkeeper Tomas Gomez.

The Roughnecks came even closer to leveling the score in the 28th minute when a header from Jhon Pirez on a corner kick from Nemanja Vukovic was headed off the line by STLFC midfielder Lewis Hilton.

The second half opened much like the first, with Saint Louis applying most of the early pressure. Cerda came up big in the 51st minute when he dove to his left to deny a blistering shot from distance from Hilton.

Saint Louis got its second goal of the match just before the hour mark. Jonathan Levin was stripped of the ball in midfield, sending STLFC on the counter. With two Roughnecks chasing the ball, Calistri was left all alone and easily finished into the far corner of the net to put Tulsa into a 2-0 hole.

Calistri closed out his big night in the 68th minute when he used a 360-degree spin to get past Josh Morton, then, from a tight angle, slid a left-footed shot between Cerda's legs and into the net to make it 3-0.

STLFC controlled 55% of the possession in the match and finished with a 28-12 advantage in shots.

The Roughnecks will be away from ONEOK Field for their next two matches. Next Saturday, June 16, will be a second matchup with Didier Drogba and the Phoenix Rising FC. Kickoff in Arizona is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. CDT. The following Saturday, June 23, the Roughnecks will be in California for a second meeting with Orange County FC.
