The Calgary Vipers defeated the Victoria Seals 10-5 in an exhibition game at Norbrock Stadium in Kamloops, British Columbia. The Vipers opened up an early 4-0 lead only to have the Seals bounce back with a five run inning in the fourth to take a 5-4 lead. Right away however the Snakes responded with a six run frame in the fifth to retake the lead at 10-5 and also close out the scoring. Newcomers Matt Edgecombe and Chad Rothford led the way offensively as Edgecombe went two-for-four with a three run homer and Rothford was two-for-two with two runs batted in. Newcomers Julio Ramirez, Geraldo Nova, and perennial Viper Drew Miller all collected two hits.
On the mound for Calgary Jay Broughton started and threw two scoreless innings with three strikeouts, Andrew DeMott three two hitless innings with three punchouts, Rod Scurry threw a scoreless inning, and both David Parker and Veteran, Alberta native Brant Stickel tossed hitless innings while striking out three.
The Vipers opened up the scoring in the top of the second inning as Geraldo Nova walked, Drew Miller singled, Edgecombe walked to load the bases, Rothford singled in a run, and Jonny Kaplan was hit by a pitch for a run batted in and a 2-0 score.
Calgary pushed their lead to 3-0 in the top of the third as Julio Ramirez smacked an opposite field home run.
In the top of the fourth frame the Snakes made it 4-0 when Edgecombe singled, moved to second base on a wild pitch, and scored on a second Rothford RBI base hit.
Victoria responded in the bottom of the inning as Shane Cronin homered, Phil Ortez singled, Charlie Strandlund picked up a hit, Terrence McClain knocked in a run, and Matt Kavanaugh hit a three run shot for a 5-4 lead.
Calgary matched the Seals five run frame with a six run inning of their own for a 10-5 advantage. Ramirez singled, Nova reached on an error that allowed Ramirez to score, Caonabo Cosme singled in a run, Miller doubled, Luis Taveras reached on an error which allowed a run to cross the plate, and Edgecombe hit a three run dinger.
The Calgary Vipers will play one more exhibition game against the Victoria Seals in Kamloops, British Columbia on May 13th. On May 15th the team is hosting a Meet & Greet and serving up a BBQ Burger Cook-off at the Main Dish in Calgary. The Vipers open up the 2010 Golden Baseball League season on May 19th with a seven game road-trip through Yuma and Tucson, Arizona.
Opening Day is scheduled for May 27th at Foothills Stadium with the Strong Warriors of Maui, Hawaii making their first ever appearance in Calgary. Maui is one of two new teams in the G.B.L. with Tijuana, Mexico being the other. The league now stretches over three countries and three different time zones and this season a new rule change has been implemented that will eliminate the designated hitter and allow pitchers to bat for themselves.
