Victoria Seals News Release
Victoria, BC - Squaring off against the North Division leading Calgary Vipers for the first time in nearly a month and a half, the Victoria Seals opened a three-game series at Royal Athletic Park on Tuesday night. With the Vipers sending Erik Dessau (6-3) to the hill for the start, the home side responded with James Garcia (3-1) in the series opener.
Getting just the start they were looking for, the Seals jumped out to an early lead when Wilver Perez launched just the second pitch in the bottom of the first inning over the left field fence for a 1-0 lead. Calgary responded in the top of the second, though, when both Colin Moro and Caobano Cosme reached on singles, and Rick Guarno lifted a three-run shot out of the park to put the Vipers up 3-1.
The Seals staged a response of their own in the bottom of the third, using singles from both Josh Arhart and Brian Rios, a Matt Kavanaugh walk to load the bases, and a base hit from Brett Flowers to pull within one. The home side then grabbed the lead in the fourth frame when a one-out double from Sergio Pedroza set up a single from Jamar Hill and another RBI hit from Rios to jump out front by a 4-3 score.
The see-saw affair took a final swing in the fifth frame when Calgary retook the lead with a lead-off home run from Fehlandt Lentini followed by a double from Nelson Castro and an RBI groundout courtesy of Moro to lift the Vipers to a 5-4 score.
Another lead-off home run, this time from Cosme, added to the Vipers' lead an inning later. Calgary then loaded the bases with a single from Guarno, followed by a walk to Drew Miller and a sacrifice bunt from Dillon O'Krane that reached on a throwing error to the Victoria starter. With reliever Ethan Katz taking over on the mound for the Seals, Lentini cashed two runners with a base hit, then Castro picked up another base hit to load the bases once more before a two-run single from Moro capped off a 10-4 Calgary advantage.
The Vipers picked up right where they left off in the top of the seventh, receiving a two-base knock from Guarno. Then, after Miller was hit by pitch and O'Krane singled to load the bases, Lentini and Castro plated runs with a base hit each, and Jorge Mejia scored one more on a fielder's choice for a 13-4 lead.
After the Vipers added another run in the top of the eighth on an RBI single from Miller, Victoria clawed back within a nine-run hole when Bret Levier singled and scored on an RBI double from Hill to bring the score to 14-5. Despite adding another pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth when a fielding error to Castro allowed both Rios and Kavanaugh to score after a hit-by-pitch and a walk, respectively, the deficit proved to be too much for the Seals. Posting three home runs and a total of 18 hits, the Vipers take game one by a 14-7 final score.
Seals starter James Garcia takes his second loss on the season while Calgary reliever Todd Moser collects his first win on the year for the Vipers. Fehlandt Lentini was 3-for-5 with four RBI's while Colin Moro also drove in three. Brian Rios was Victoria's top hitter on the night, going 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI's in the losing effort.
The Seals will return to Royal Athletic Park for round two against the Vipers at tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. (PT), before the series finale on Thursday afternoon. Tickets are still available at www.selectyourtickets.com, and the contest will also be broadcast live at www.victoriaseals.ca.
