JACKSONVILLE, FL - The Jacksonville Suns announced today that Bolles senior Caleb Denmark has been selected as the 2010 recipient of the Bragan Award. The Bragan Award is given annually to a North Florida high school senior baseball player who has exhibited outstanding skill on the baseball diamond and strong character and leadership off the field.
Denmark was nominated by a panel of experts from throughout North Florida chaired by longtime local amateur baseball expert Richard Abis. The decision was finalized by Suns President & General Manager Peter D. Bragan, Jr.
"Caleb Denmark exemplifies all the attributes we are looking for in a Bragan Award winner," said Bragan, Jr. "Not only is he a fine ballplayer with Major League potential, he's a great kid, too."
Denmark, a 6'3, 215lb. third baseman, helped the Bulldogs to a 29-3 record en route to their defense of the Class 3A state championship. Over the 32 games, Denmark batted .453 with 8 home runs and 41 RBI while also posting 27 walks versus only ten strikeouts. He was also the student president of the Bolles Fellowship of Christian Athletes club for the 2009-10 school year. Denmark has signed with the University of North Florida to play baseball under new head coach Smoke Laval.
The 2010 Bragan Award will be presented to Denmark on June 25 during a pre-game ceremony at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville. Denmark is the fourth player to receive the Bragan Award, following Eagle's View graduate & current Florida Gator Austin Maddox, Episcopal graduate & current Florida State Seminole Hunter Scantling, and former Fletcher Senator & current UNF Osprey Sam Perry.
The Bragan Award is named in honor of Peter Bragan, Sr., who has owned the Jacksonville Suns since 1984 and has made great contributions to the overall cultural and sports scene in Jacksonville, including high school and youth athletics. The award is modeled after a 1930's Nokona-brand lefthanded fielder's glove that belonged to Bragan Sr. when he was playing semi-pro ball in Philadelphia. The original glove was used to cast a mold from which to make the awards.
