Buzzards Sign New Defenseman
August 1, 2002 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
El Paso Buzzards News Release
EL PASO, Texas â The El Paso Buzzards announced today the signing of defenseman Trevor Folk for the 2002-2003 season. Folk, 25, is a native of Pilot Butte, Saskatchewan and played three seasons in the Central Hockey League totaling 69 points (15-54-69) in 152 games while garnering 381 penalty minutes.
The 6'1" 200 lb. Folk spent two seasons with the Wichita Thunder from 1998-2000 where he was paired with current Buzzards defenseman Rhett Dudley on the blue line. Folk then spent the 2000-2001 season playing in Alabama for the CHL's Huntsville Tornado under head coach Craig Coxe in Coxe's first season as a head coach.
Coxe, the Buzzards' head coach and director of hockey operations, looks forward to having his former player return as a Buzzard and said, "The reason I like Trevor Folk is because he is the type of defenseman who has a bit of a mean streak about him. He plays a very physical game and is a good skater and strong defenseman; the numbers he has put up don't truly reflect his excellent offensive abilities. We believe he will contribute at both ends of the ice.
"I look forward to coaching Trevor again because he knows what I want and I know what I am getting with him. We have a great working relationship."
Buzzards' vice president and director of operations John Zang is happy to have Folk on board for the upcoming season and said, "In the semi-finals against Austin, the Ice Bats were able to take advantage of some of our smaller players and Trevor will ensure that no one stands in front of our net without paying the price."
Folk is the third defenseman and fourth player signed by the Buzzards for the 2002-2003 season. He joins Rhett Dudley and Jason Tessier on the Buzzards' blue line and forward Derrell Upton on the roster.
The El Paso Buzzards play in the professional Central Hockey League. The team finished their season with a 36-24-4 record and made it to the second round of the play-offs for the first time in four years. Season ticket and sponsorship packages are available for the 2002-2003 season by calling the Buzzards' office at (915) 533-PUCK or by visiting www.elpasobuzzards.com.
