EL PASO, Texas – The El Paso Buzzards announced today the signing of goaltender Matt Carmichael for the 2002-2003 season. Carmichael, 25, played last season for the San Antonio Iguanas of the Central Hockey League where he posted an undefeated record of 6-0-1 and an impressive 2.03 goals against average. Carmichael also boasts the second-best save percentage in the CHL last season with a percentage of 0.932.

Carmichael, a native of Bristol, Quebec, will enter his seventh professional season having played in the East Coast Hockey League for the Roanoke Express and the Louisville Riverfrogs and in the CHL as a member of the Port Huron Border Cats, Hunstville Channel Cats, Huntsville Tornado and the Iguanas.

Buzzards' head coach and director of hockey operations Craig Coxe coached Carmichael during his Tornado days and is happy to have his netminder back under his wing. "Matty played for me two years ago and though I brought him in as my backup, he was playing in our #1 position within a month and a half," said Coach Coxe who has been meticulously building his team since signing with the Buzzards in June. "Matty is young and hungry and he feels that he is up to the challenge of helping the Buzzards win a lot of games."

"We are really excited to have Matt Carmichael join the Buzzards," said John Zang, Buzzards' vice-president and director of operations. "With Matt and the defensemen we have already signed we are confident that our end of the ice will be well taken care of."

Carmichael joins defensemen Trevor Folk, Jason Tessier and Rhett Dudley and right winger Derrell Upton on the 2002-2003 Buzzards roster.

The El Paso Buzzards play in the professional Central Hockey League. The team finished their season with a 36-24-4 record and made it to the second round of the play-offs for the first time in four years. Season ticket and sponsorship packages are available for the 2002-2003 season by calling the Buzzards' office at (915) 533-PUCK or by visiting www.elpasobuzzards.com.
