Burnevik Scores Twice, Caps Pick up 6-1 Win over Chicago

December 3, 2023 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Madison Capitols News Release

Although the in-arena staff gave Carsen Musser the first star of the game on Friday night, coming away from Bob Suter's Capitol Ice Arena, it's tough to imagine anyone thinking Austin Burnevik was not the star of the show. Burnevik scored goals eleven and twelve in the game, and goal number twelve earned recognition from John Buccigross of ESPN, Bleacher Report, and countless outlets around the hockey world. He stepped out of the box and found a breakaway. In all alone, the forward got creative flipped his stick to his back hand moved the puck up on the toe, and stuck it through the five-hole of the the Chicago net minder.

The performance for Burnevik and the Capitols brought home the team's tenth win of the season by a score of 6-1. The tenth win for the Capitols comes two months and ten days earlier than it did last season with the team picking up win ten on February 11th last season.

To go back to the first star of the game as awarded by the in-arena staff, Carsen Musser put up the best goaltending performance for the team since the first game in November when the Capitols defeated Omaha 6-1. Musser stopped 19 of 20 Steel shots on goal.

Madison is now 2-1-0-0 against Chicago this season. The second win against a team is something that Madison has sought after since the beginning of the season. The Caps had nine wins against nine different opponents coming into Friday night as the team has struggled against teams in multiple matchups this season, but hopefully, moving forward, this knocks that barrier down for the team.

Also scoring in the game were James Hong(8), Rainers Rullers(5), Brendan Lamb(3), and Andrew Kuzma(9). For Hong, his point streak extended to five, and has now scored in four of his last five games as well. The forward out of Irvine, California has averaged over a point per game rate since October 28th.

Madison hits the road Saturday to face off against Chicago once again as the team looks for the first sweep of the season. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 pm at Fox Valley Ice Arena.

As part of the pregame show in-arena on Friday, the Capitols will unveil their one-day rebrand for December 9th's Wisconsin Night presented by New Glarus Brewing. Madison will become the Wisconsin IceHoles for one night only with special jerseys to be auctioned off after the game. Tickets are available for next Saturday's game at tickets.madcapshockey.com.
