(Edmonton) While he would have much preferred to be leading his team into Sunday's 106th Grey Cup to be played in Edmonton, retiring BC Lions head coach Wally Buono was again honoured for his legendary career during tonight's CFL Awards earning the league's Hugh Campbell Distinguished Leadership Award.
Given each year to the individual who has demonstrated great leadership and made significant contributions to the CFL, the league's all-time leader in coaching wins with 282 was presented the prestigious honour by CFL Commisoner Randy Ambrosie.
"It is difficult to think of someone who has contributed or achieved more in our league than Wally Buono," said Ambrosie. "It's almost impossible to imagine what life in the CFL will be like without him."
Lions' veteran fullback Rolly Lumbala was also a recipient of a notable CFL award Thursday evening taking home the Jake Gaudaur Veteran's Award.
Presented annually to the CFL player who best demonstrates the attributes of Canada's veterans: strength, perseverance, courage, comradeship and contribution to Canadian communities, Lumbala played much of the season with a heavy heart while his father battled cancer, eventually succumbing to the illness in September.
Lumbala becomes the first Lion to receiver the Jake Gaudaur Veteran's Award since its inception in 2010.
Lions kicker and punter Ty Long who was named a West Division All-Star earlier this month was up for Most Outstanding Special Teams Player but lost out to Ottawa RedBlacks' placekicker Lewis Ward.
