Mobile BayBears News Release
Orlando, Fla. â Mobile BayBears' manager Craig Colbert was forced to make a decision before their game against the Orlando Rays even started Friday as his original starting pitcher, Johnny Hunter was promoted to Triple-A Portland. He decided to go with reliever, Mike Bumstead. That choice looked like the wrong one after the first inning, however Bumstead made his leader look good as he settled in as the BayBears defeated the Rays in game two of their series, 6-3.
Bumstead allowed three first inning runs as the Rays batted around and left the bases loaded in the first frame. Mobile had Duncan McAdoo warming in the bullpen before the inning came to an end. Bumstead would go on to throw five more shutout innings as the BayBears chipped away at the Orlando 3-0 lead.
BayBears DH Jon Knott led off the second inning with his league-leading ninth homerun of the season, a solo shot that extended his hitting streak to 10 games. The homer marked the 12th straight game a Mobile batter has left the yard.
Bobby Scales drove in the next two Mobile runs. In the third he brought home Todd Donovan with an RBI double and in the fifth, Scales tied the game though he did not record an RBI as he grounded into a double play, scoring Ben Johnson.
The BayBears went ahead in the eighth with two runs as Khalil Greene and Danny Bravo had back-to-back RBI singles. Rico Washington added an insurance run in the top of the ninth driving in Scales with an RBI single.
Mobile reliever Alan Webb (1-1) earned the win throwing one and two-thirds scoreless innings, striking out one. Closer Rusty Tucker picked up his 11th save of the season working the final four outs.
Steve Watkins (1-3) will start game three of the series Saturday night for the BayBears against Orlando's Jose Veras (0-3). Game time from Disney's Wide World of Sports is set for 6:05 Central Time.
