Amarillo Bulls News Release
WICHITA FALLS, TX - It didn't take long for the Amarillo Bulls offense to get back rolling again after being limited to one goal over the past weekend.
Greg Gibson scored twice and Joe Kozlak added three helpers to power the Bulls past the Wichita Falls Wildcats 5-2 on Wednesday night at Kay Yeager Coliseum. It was the Bulls 40th win of the season and 22nd on the road, and it also put them back into first place in the overall standings.
Gibson gave the Bulls a 3-2 lead late in the second period thanks to a pass from Kozlak and then added an insurance marker on a breakaway early in the third period. The two were on a line with John Gustafsson who also got into the offense with a big goal in the middle stanza.
"That line with Gibson, Kozlak and Gustafsson played really well," said Bulls Head Coach Dennis Williams. "Kozlak works hard and Gibson finished off a couple of nice plays. It was a great individual effort by John (Gustafsson), who went right by the goaltender's ears with his shot. That is a good place to put the puck because it's hard for the goaltender to keep a glove that high. It's a big time goal by a big time player."
It was slow start to the game for the Amarillo Bulls, and surrendered the game's first goal on a poor clearing pass out of their zone. However, near the end of the period the Bulls pulled even after having their second goal disallowed in as many games. John Rey tied the game on a blast from the point with five seconds remaining. The goal broke a Bulls scoreless drought of 79:55 seconds. Amarillo outshot Wichita Falls 11-7 in the first period.
The second period was a much stronger one for the Bulls as they score twice. First John Gustafsson's quick wrist shot found the back of the net from Karl Beckman at 10:10. After the Wildcats pulled even, the Bulls pulled back in front when Greg Gibson scored on a terrific feed from Joe Kozlak.
Gibson increased the Bulls lead to 4-2 early in the third period from Joe Kozlak, and then six minutes later Clint Carlisle rounded out the scoring with another great shot from the top of the face-off circle.
The Amarillo Bulls outshot the Wichita Falls Wildcats 32-28 including 25-18 after 40 minutes. There were 10 total power plays in the contest with neither team scoring a goal.
There are two excellent opportunities to see the Amarillo Bulls at the Budweiser Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center. This Friday and Saturday the Bulls entertain the Corpus Christi IceRays at 7 pm in a possible first round playoff preview.
Friday's game is sponsored by Buzula Furniture and three luck fans will win recliners when the Bulls score their first three goals. Saturday's game is presented by Plains Dairy and one lucky fan will win milk for a year.
