Bulls Tie Game Late But Fall in Shootout
September 27, 2019 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Amarillo Bulls News Release
Amarillo, TX - After a late tying goal by the Amarillo Bulls would force a overtime in the home opener, the Shreveport Mudbugs spoiled the festivities after picking up the lone goal in the shootout to top the Bulls 2-1 on Friday night.
The Bulls used the first 20 minutes to pepper the Shreveport netminder, Maiszon Balboa, with 16 shots, none of which were successful in breaking the Mudbugs' backstop.
"We had a lot of shots on goal in the first," said Rocky Russo. "We can't score if we continue to put shots directly into the goaltender's chest."
The offense slowed for both team in the second period, but the physicality was elevated as the hit totals climbed during the second frame.
The two teams would play to a tie at the end of two periods and through a large portion of the third, before Rais Francis snapped a shot past Bulls goalie Charlie Glockner to make the score 1-0 in favor of Shreveport with just over three minutes remaining in regulation.
After a late penalty on the Mudbugs put the Bulls on the powerplay, the Bulls pulled the goalie and tied the game with just over 20 seconds left in regulation on a long slap shot by Lauri Sertti.
After the overtime period produced no decision, the two teams took to the shootout where Shreveport's Sam Miller tucked home the only goal in the back-and-forth, solidifying the victory for the Mudbugs, 2-1.
The Bulls will drop the puck against the Mudbugs for a second night in a row at 7:05 PM on Saturday night. The game will be broadcast on HockeyTV and on 107.1 Nash Icon with pregame coverage beginning at 6:45 PM. For tickets, go to amarillobulls.com/tickets or call (806) 242-1122.
