Amarillo Bulls News Release
AMARILLO, TX - The Amarillo Bulls are glad to be done with the New Mexico Mustangs this season. Two third period goals in an eight minutes span lifted the Amarillo Bulls past the New Mexico Mustangs 3-1 on Friday night in the Bull Pen at the Amarillo Civic Center.
New Mexico has given the Bulls all they could handle this season battling hard in many of the contests. It was the Bulls eight win over New Mexico this season, and it also extended their string of points in consecutive games (no losses in regulation) to 10 games. The Bulls were also able to maintain their two-point lead over the Texas Tornado in the NAHL's South Division. Texas outlasted Corpus Christi 7-6 in a shootout.
For the second straight game, the third period was the Bulls' best as they were able to score twice and snap a 1-1 tie. Forward Dan Sherer scored on a lethal shot at 2:20 mark from linemates Matt Johnson and Zack Smoot. About eight minutes later, Cody âFreeman tallied an insurance goal on the power play from Sean Keane and Zack Smoot.
Goaltender Greg Gruehl made his first start of the season for Amarillo and stopped 23 of 24 shots he faced.
It was a difficult start to the game for the Amarillo Bulls as they fell behind in the first 52 seconds. However, Amarillo took over in the last 12 minutes of the stanza outshooting New Mexico 10-2 and 10-4 overall. There were no power plays but one fight between Erick Millisor of Amarillo and Kalin Paul of New Mexico.
In the second period the Bulls put another assault of shots on the net and finally broke through. Defenseman Luke Jenkins shot was deflected in by Zack Smoot to tie the game. The goal was shorthanded at the 15:55 mark.
There were five total power plays in the contest with the Bulls finishing 1 for 3.
The Amarillo Bulls continue their three-game home stand tomorrow (Saturday) night when they host the Topeka RoadRunners at 7 pm. It's one dollar hotdog night and fans will be able to see two of the hottest teams in the North American Hockey League go head to head.
