Durham Bulls News Release
Durham, NC-Jon Weber got the Bulls on the scoreboard with a solo home run to right in the first inning, but it was a called third strike he took in the bottom of the ninth with the winning run at second base that sealed Toledo's 6-5 victory at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park Thursday.
Chris Mason (2-5, 4.97) allowed only two runs through five, but got tagged for four runs in Toledo's half of the sixth inning. The Bulls answered with a two-run double by Dan Johnson in the bottom of the frame, and added two more on Johnson's sixth home run of the year in the eighth. The Mud Hens called upon Blaine Neal to shut Durham down in the ninth, but Reid Brignac and Fernando Perez both ended up in scoring position after a wild pitch with two outs. Weber smacked a line drive deep but foul, and he later struck out looking to end the game on a pitch he disputed demonstrably.
Eddie Bonine earned his league-leading eighth win in seven innings of work, allowing seven hits, three earned runs and a walk while striking out six. Neal earned his league-best 14th save. Jeff Larish starred for the Mud Hens, going 3-for-3 with three runs scored and a home run, while Johnson was 3-for-4 with a homer, a double, four runs batted in and a run scored to lead the Bulls.
The Bulls and Mud Hens have their final meeting of the regular season Friday at 7:05 p.m. at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Durham will send right-hander Mitch Talbot (3-3, 4.47) to the mound in a bid to win three games of the four-game set, and Toledo will call upon righty Virgil Vasquez (2-3, 6.32) to earn the split.
