Durham Bulls News Release

(Durham, NC) The Bulls rallied in the bottom of the ninth with four hits and two runs but where closed out with consecutive bases-loaded strikeouts by Reid Brignac and Matt Joyce as they fell to Columbus, 10-6 Saturday at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

Durham's pitching staff was again rocked with double digit hits and runs for the second consecutive day. Columbus jumped out to a quick lead in the first inning after their first two batters reached on errors from Ray Sadler and Brignac. The Clippers then proceeded to plate four unearned runs off Bulls starting pitcher David Price to close out the first inning.

The Bulls came back in the second with a two-run home run from Chris Richard and in the third with another long ball from Joyce, this time a solo shot to cut the lead to 4-3.

Columbus was able to chase Price in the fourth as Julio DePaula came on in relief with two on and two outs. The next Clippers' batter, George Lombard, doubled off DePaula, driving in both runners to increase their lead to 6-3 with both tallies credited to Price.

The final line on Price on the night was 3.2 innings pitched with six runs (two earned) on four hits, three walks and a strikeout while picking up the loss and moving to 1-3 on the season.

Durham and Columbus both traded runs in the seventh and the Clippers were able to add three more in the eighth and ninth to increase their lead to 10-4. The two-run rally in the ninth from the Bulls fell short as they moved to 13-9 on the year after their second-consecutive loss.

The Bulls offense had no trouble getting runners on base as they out hit Columbus 14-13 and out walked the Clippers 5-3, but Durham stranded 19 base runners, including eight in scoring position.

The two Durham errors in the first inning were also costly, contributing to the four total unearned runs, the most by a Bulls opponent all season.

Durham will look for a series split Sunday in the last game of their four-game series with Columbus who took a 2-1 series lead with the win. Right-Hander Wade Davis takes the mound for the Bulls with first pitch scheduled for 5:05 p.m.
