Bulls Fall to Topeka 2-1

TOPEKA, KS - The Amarillo Bulls came close to get out of their slump, but ran into a hot goaltender. Roman Ammirato tallied the lone marker as the Bulls dropped a 2-1 decision to the Topeka RoadRunners on Saturday night at Kansas Expo Center Landon Arena.

That game concluded a wild stretch for the Bulls that saw them play 12 road games between November 1st and December 15, while battle through weather problems and other adversity and still posting a mark of 7-5-0.

The Bulls do have company atop the South Division as the Wichita Falls Wildcats pulled even for first after their win. The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees and Topeka RoadRunners are tied for 2nd with 39 points. Amarillo surrendered the overall lead for the first time in more than a month to the Fairbanks Ice Dogs which were victorious in Kenai River.

Dennis Williams' charged played a spirited game and worked hard at both ends of the ice, but could only get one goal past goaltender PJ Bridges who made 26 of 27 stops. Collin Delia, who entered that game yielding just one goal in 180 of hockey against the RoadRunners, played well surrendering a goal in the first minute of the game, and then the other midway through the second.

The Topeka RoadRunners raced out to a 1-0 lead just 53 seconds into the opening period on a controversial goal, that appeared to have not crossed the goal line. But upon further review and discussion, the referee let the call stand.

After failing to score on a couple of power plays, the Bulls continued to work hard and tied the game. Roman Ammirato had a great burst of speed and slipped the puck through the legs of PJ Bridges. Mike Davis earned an assist on the play at the 16:26 mark. The Bulls outshot the RoadRunners 12-7.

The second period featured both teams working hard and having chances on the power play. The RoadRunners took a 2-1 lead midway through the stanza on a shorthanded marker. The Bulls battled, but had a tough time breaking through. Topeka outshot Amarillo 13-5 in the period.

The Bulls were all over Topeka in the third period working hard to get the equalizer. Amarillo had some terrific chances in front, but none of them materialized and found the back of the net.

Each team had 27 shots on goal in the contest with the Bulls having the upper hand in the third 10-7. There were a total of 10 power plays with each team getting five opportunities apiece.

Hockey returns to the Budweiser Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center next Friday and Saturday when the Amarillo Bulls begin an eight game home stand with two against the Wichita Falls Wildcats. Game times are 7 pm. On Saturday, it's the annual Teddy Bear Toss in Support of Toys for Tots. Fans are encouraged to bring a new or gently used Teddy Bear or Stuffed Animal to the game and when the Bulls score their first goal throw the toys onto the ice.
