Belleville Bulls News Release
LONDON, ON - Two clubs that recently swapped players went head to head at Budweiser Gardens in London on Saturday night. Brett Welychka and Aaron Berisha took the ice against their former teams for the first time in front of 8,830 fans. The London Knights used a 4 goal second period to their advantage on route to a 5-1 victory over the Belleville Bulls.
Right from the drop of the puck the Knights peppered Charlie Graham with a number of scoring chances. London's top line of Rupert-Dvorak-Marner created some problems for the Bulls early on as the Knights opened up the scoring first. Christian Dvorak received a centering pass from Mitch Marner and beat Graham at 7:19 to put London up 1-0.
Knights Rookie Chris Martenet was assessed a 2-minute minor for a check from behind that gave the Bulls 35 seconds on the man advantage to wrap up the first period. Shots favoured the Knights 14-7 after 20 minutes.
London picked up right where they left off in the first period, putting lots of pressure on the Bulls to begin the middle frame. Just over the 4-minute mark Chandler Yakimowicz scored from the hash marks to make it 2-0 London. Brandon Crawley and Tyler Nother added helpers on the goal. The Knights weren't done there, though, less then 2 minutes later Matt Rupert beat a diving Charlie Graham to give his club a 3-0 lead, prompting a goalie change for the Bulls.
Rookie netminder Connor Hicks came in with 14:26 left in the second looking to control the damage. The Bulls showed some life a few minutes later when Jordan Subban, who continues to lead all OHL defenceman, buried his 6th of the season from Michael Cramarossa and Brett Gustavsen.
That's all the Bulls would muster, though, as the Knights would add two more later in the period, one from Max Domi and the other from Mitch Marner. Winger Michael McCarron had assists on both of the goals to help his team close out the second frame with a 5-1 lead.
The final stanza was much calmer as the Knights played a more defensive game to protect their lead. The Bulls had a couple of chances to cut into the London lead while on the man advantage but to no avail. London goaltender Michael Giugovaz made 28 saves in the win. Hicks made 20 saves while Graham stopped 17 shots.
