Bulls Fall to IceRays 2-1 in Shootout

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX - The North American Hockey League's new overtime and shootout format hasn't treated the Amarillo Bulls kindly to start the 2015-16 season. A goal in a final round of regulation shooters sent the Bulls to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of the Corpus Christi IceRays at American Bank Center on Saturday night. Amarillo collected one point but its winless streak was extended to seven games (0-6-1).

The Bulls held a 1-0 lead for most of the game but surrendered a late power play goal that tied the game. Amarillo did have a chance to win it on a special team's opportunity of its own in the final 2:21 of regulation but couldn't get the puck across the goal line.

It was a good start to the game for the visitors which were rewarded for their hard work. Phil Fromberger's shot was tipped home by Joey Molinaro and the Bulls had a 1-0 advantage at the 14:32 mark of the stanza. The Bulls had the shot advantage in the opening period 11-10, and the margin of play.

The momentum was clearly in the Bulls favor in the early moments of the second period after the team killed off a critical 5-on-3 penalty-kill. However, IceRays goaltender Dryden McKay prevented the Bulls from being able to feed of that opportunity and made some key saves to keep the score the same. Corpus Christi outshot the Bulls 11-10 in the period.

The home team came out firing in the third period but goaltender Anton Martinsson prevented the game from being tied. Two late penalties would eventually change the outcome of the game. The IceRays garnered the power play with four minutes remaining and scored on a play at the side of the net to tie the score. The Bulls had their own opportunity on the man advantage in the final three minutes. The best chance was by George Mika who was sent in on goal but was denied by McKay's pad and glove. Corpus Christi outshot the Bulls 15-5 in the third.

There was no scoring in the three-on-three overtime period. The first two rounds in the shootout produced no goals. After Joey Molinaro failed to score, the IceRays tallied when the puck dribbled through the legs of Martinsson.

The Corpus Christi IceRays outshot the Amarillo Bulls 39-29. The Bulls and the IceRays combined for seven power plays with the IceRays getting the lone marker.

A long road swing for the Amarillo Bulls concludes next Friday and Saturday with two against the Lone Star Brahmas at NYTEX Sports Center at 7:30 pm. It won't be long before the Amarillo Bulls return home to the Budweiser Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center.
