Amarillo Bulls News Release
BLAINE, MN - A line combination that had been together since the Main Camp in Brighton, Michigan in July propelled the Amarillo Bulls to a third-period comeback on Friday night at the North American Hockey League Showcase in Blaine, Minnesota.
However, that comeback fell short as the Amarillo Bulls dropped a 4-3 overtime decision to the Kenai River Brown Bears. The loss dropped the Bulls record to 1-1-1 with one final game remaining tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon at 12:45 pm versus the Springfield Jr. Blues.
Charlie Combs, Riley Christensen and Thomas Fazio combined for all three goals as the Amarillo Bulls rallied from a 3-0 third period deficit. Combs scored twice, Christensen had three helpers, while Ruslan Rakhmatov and Thomas Fazio has single assists.
The first period was again the Bulls downfall surrendering three goals including the first two via the power play. Amarillo has been outscored 7-0 in the first period of games this season.
It was a scoreless second period as goaltender Jacob Weatherly kept the Bulls within striking distance coming up with timely saves. At the other end the Bulls kept buzzing despite not being able to score.
The trio of Christensen, Combs and Fazio cued the Bulls comeback by teaming up for the first goal. Combs scored his first in the NAHL from Christensen and Rakhmatov just 20 seconds into the stanza. Four minutes later, the offense ignited to produce the second goal and cut the deficit to within one. Combs scored on a rebound from his linemates Fazio and Christensen.
In the final two minutes with the Bulls pressing, Fazio and Christensen worked their way into the Brown Bears zone and teamed up to tie the game. Fazio finished on the play on a great pass across.
Despite the Bulls having the momentum in overtime, it was Kenai River that raced down the ice and potted a goal on the short side to win the game. It was the Brown Bears second straight win over Amarillo dating back to last year's showcase.
The Amarillo Bulls outshot the Kenai River Brown Bears 34-33. Each team had eight power plays with the Brown Bears scoring twice.
