Amarillo Bulls News Release
AMARILLO, TX - The Amarillo Bulls had their home opener spoiled at the hands of the New Mexico Mustangs on Saturday night at the Budweiser Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center.
A late third period power play goal lifted the Mustangs to a 5-4 win over the Bulls. It was Amarillo's first regulation loss of the season. The Bulls rallied from three-two goal deficits to get the game tied at 4-4 but had difficult time taking the lead in the third. Goaltender Randy Graham was outstanding in net, making some outstanding saves to keep his team even.
A terrific crowd was on hand to watch the home opener at the Amarillo Civic Center. After the players were introduced onto the ice the two banners were unveiled, one for the 2011 South Division Championship, and the other for the third place finish at the Robertson Cup.
Once the game started it was all New Mexico early as they tallied two goals in the first six minutes of the game. However the Bulls rallied with a marker from newcomer Tyler Deresky at 10:13 from TJ Sarcona. Amarillo outshot New Mexico 13-11 in the first period.
The second period featured five goals with the Bulls rallying from two two-goal deficits to get the game even at 4-4. Joe Kozlak, Omar Mullen and John Gustafsson netted goals for Amarillo in the period. John Rey and Karl Beckman each had two assists, while Brandon Lubin and Luke Jenkins each had one assist. Bulls goaltender Mike Taffe started the game, but was pulled for Greg Gruehl after New Mexico tallied their fourth goal.
