Bulls Dump Bees 3-1 for Seventh Straight Win
January 12, 2014 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Amarillo Bulls News Release
AMARILLO, TX - The Amarillo Bulls have been a dominant third period team in their short history in the North American Hockey League. The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees found that out on Saturday night at the Budweiser Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center.
Roman Ammirato netted the game winning goal midway through the third period to lift the Bulls past the Killer Bees 3-1 for the team's seven win in a row and a 10 point lead over second Topeka in the South Division. After collecting just one point in the first two games of the home stand the Bulls caught fire and won seven in a row getting contributions up and down the line-up.
The Bulls controlled the third period and wore down the Killer Bees defensively. Just past the midway mark of regulation, Mike Davis scooped up the puck along the boards and put it in the front of the net where Roman Ammirato's shot beat Olli Kalkaja to make it 2-1. Brendan McGuire also helped out on the play to earn an assist. In the final minute the Killer Bees pulled their goaltender looking for the equalizer but the Bulls were able to turn the tables and Brady Ferguson scored into an empty net from Mike Davis. Amarillo had 15 shots on goal and limited their opponents to just three.
The game started out with a scoreless opening 20 minutes between the Bulls and the Killer Bees. Amarillo outshot the visitors early 7-2 and controlled most of the play. It was a turnaround in the second half of the period with the Killer Bees having the shot edge 9-1. Both Collin Delia and Olli Kalkaja were test in the first 20 minutes making some big saves to keep the game even.
As they did on Friday night, the Killer Bees took the first lead, scoring on the power play just past the midway mark of the stanza on an odd-man rush. Five minutes later, the Bulls pull even when Kyle Gattelaro tipped home a pass from Brady Ferguson. The play was started by a heads-up pass from goaltender Collin Delia who spotted Ferguson open. The Bulls outshot the Killer Bees 9-7 in the second.
The Amarillo Bulls outshot the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees 32-22. Six Bulls players had three shots on goal each. There were a total of five power plays with the Bulls going 1 for 2 and the Killer Bees were 1 for 3. Collin Delia stopped 21 of 22 shots he faced for his fourth win in a row.
