Amarillo Bulls News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI, TX - Cody Gylling and Will Harrison each scored twice to power the Amarillo Bulls past the Corpus Christi IceRays 5-1 on Friday night at American Bank Center. The victory snapped the Bulls four game losing streak, and guaranteed them the season series win over the IceRays.
Despite being out of the South Division playoff race, the Bulls came out with plenty of heart and character, outworking Corpus Christi right from the opening puck drop. The Bulls jumped out to a 2-0 first period lead and never looked back. The story in the game was also the play of goaltender Anton Martinsson who turned aside 27 of 28 shots he faced to post his 16th win between the pipes. Riley Christensen netted the other Bulls' goal.
Luke Novak picked up four helpers, while Elijah Barriga had two.
The Amarillo Bulls had lots of jump in the opening period and took it to the IceRays at American Bank Center. Riley Christensen got the Bulls off to a great start when he tipped home a shot from Matt Nehls and Cody Gylling at the 7:03 mark. Four minutes later, the Bulls increase their lead on a pretty passing play between Luke Novak who spotted Cody Gylling in front of the net. The play was set up by Riley Christensen who moved the puck up the ice. The Bulls didn't let their foot of the gas and controlled much of the play. Amarillo outshot Corpus Christi 10-4 after 20 minutes.
The second period featured lots off end-to-end play but the Bulls still staying a step ahead of the Ice Rays. After failing to score on a five minute major, the Bulls capitalize on a 2-on-1. Elijah Barriga put a great pass on the stick of Cody Gylling who scored into an open net to make it 3-0 at the 13:55 mark. Anton Martinsson played well for the Bulls in the middle stanza protecting the lead with key saves, including some on back to back power plays by the Ice Rays. The Bulls were outshot by the IceRays 15-14 in the second.
Penalty killing has been a strong-point the past dozen games for the Bulls this season, and it proved to be another strong point. The Bulls prevented the IceRays from scoring early on a power play. Shortly after that, Will Harrison raced over the blue line and wired a shot past Andrew Lindgren to make it 4-0. Luke Novak and Jesper Synnelius earned assists on the play. The Ice Rays broke the shutout bid of Martinsson with less than five minutes remaining off a face-off win. Twenty four seconds later, the Bulls responded when Harrison netted his second of the game when his centering attempt went off of Lindgren's stick and into the net.
The Amarillo Bulls outshot the Corpus Christi IceRays 34-29 including 10-9 in the third period. Each team had power play opportunities but did not score.
The 2014-15 regular season for the Amarillo Bulls closes out tomorrow (Saturday) night when they face the Corpus Christi IceRays at a special start time of 8 pm. That face-off time may get pushed back further due to events during the day at American Bank Center.
