Amarillo Bulls News Release
AMARILLO, TX - Tyler Deresky's last second heroics helped the Amarillo Bulls pull out a big win on Friday night.
Deresky tipped home a shot with just four seconds remaining in regulation time to lift the Bulls past the Corpus Christi IceRays 3-2 at the Budweiser Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center.
The victory was the Bulls 41st of the season and 19th on home ice and it kept them one point ahead of the Bismarck Bobcats for the overall lead in the North American Hockey League standings. The IceRays saw their lead on the fourth and final playoff spot trimmed to just two points after the Odessa Jackalopes beat Wichita Falls.
It was a wild third period that saw Amarillo take a 2-1 advantage when Greg Gibson notched his second of the game with a great shot on a bad angle. However, the IceRays tied the game on a power play goal to set up the dramatic finish.
The game appeared to be destined for overtime, but off the face off Michael Erickson pushed the puck over to the slot area where Tyler Deresky tipped it into an open net.
Bulls Head Coach Dennis Williams said the game went the team's way, but they just couldn't find the back of the net.
"We held our opponent to under 20 shots and we shoot 50 on net, it's just the law of averages," Williams said. "We have to do a better job of getting to those dirty areas and putting in those goals. I think more screens the better on this goaltender (Anthony) Stolarz. He is a big goaltender who sees the puck well, and we have to find a way to throw better quality shots instead of just tossing them at the net and letting him see them."
Most of the offense was confined to the first few minutes of each period as each team tallied early in the stanzas.
The Amarillo Bulls got their offense going quickly and scored 13 seconds into the contest. Greg Gibson converted a pass from John Gustafsson and Brandon Lubin. The Bulls outshot Corpus Christi 15-5 including 11-3 early on.
The IceRays tied the game 91 seconds into the 2nd stanza on what was their lone offensive pressure inside the Bulls zone. The Bulls had several scoring chances including Clint Carlisle shorthanded at the end of stanza but Anthony Stolarz came up with a great save.
The Amarillo Bulls outshot the Corpus Christi IceRays 51-19 including 20-5 in the third period. There were six total power plays in the contest with the IceRays notching the lone power play goal.
These two teams will face one another again tomorrow (Saturday) night at 7 pm at the Budweiser Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center. The game is sponsored by Plains Dairy and one lucky fan will win Milk for a year.
