Amarillo Bulls News Release
AMARILLO, TX - The first sellout crowd in the young history of the Amarillo Bulls got treated to two fights, nine goals and plenty of excitement on Sunday night. In the end the Bulls fired five goals over the final 40 minutes and beat the Corpus Christi IceRays 6-3 on Sonic Sunday in the Bull Pen at the Amarillo Civic Center.
It was the Bulls 24th win of the season, 14th on home ice and pulled them into a tie for second place in the South Division with the Texas Tornado. Amarillo still has four games in hand.
The Bulls trailed 2-1 through 20 minutes of hockey but bounced back with three goals in a five minute span in the second, and two more in a 44 second span in the third. Nikifor Szczerba had another strong game in net to post the victory.
A fight opened that opened the game got the crowd into a quick frenzy as Brooks Behling tangled with Ice Rays forward Jordan Miller.
The first 12 minutes of the period was dominated by special teams as the Bulls ran into penalty troubles. The Ice Rays would nab the first goal on a 5-4 to take the lead. The Bulls pulled even when Cody Freeman scored from Sean Keane at 16:20. The IceRays regained the lead near the end of the first period on a scramble in front of the net.
The second period was a huge one for the Bulls as they tallied a total of three times. Two even strength goals with a power play goals in the middle. Joe Kozlak tied the game for Amarillo when he was left alone in front of the net. TJ Sarcona earned an assist on the goal. The powerplay then went to work on a marker from Matt Johnson who's backhand shot found the mark and it was 3-2. Dennis Williams' charges were not done yet and it was Cody Freeman who scored from Dan Sherer and Keane and it was 4-2 after 40 minutes of play. That was Keane's fourth point since joining the Bulls in a trade earlier in the week.
The third period was delayed due to a problem with the Zamboni, and once play got underway the Bulls went back to work and scored twice more. Joe Kozlak tallied from Brandon Lubin and Cody Freeman at 4:25 and then Derek Hills potted one home from Zack Smoot and Lubin.
The Ice Rays added a final goal in the final two seconds of the game to round out the scoring.
There were a total of 23 power plays and 76 penalty minutes. The Bulls had two power play goals on 13 attempts, while the IceRays went 1 for 10.
The Amarillo Bulls return to action on Thursday night when they host the New Mexico Mustangs at 7 pm. That game closes a five game home stand for the Bulls.
