Bulls Announce Bulls Against Bullying Program

AMARILLO, TX - There has been a lot of news made recently regarding incidents on bullying.

The defending Robertson Cup National Champion Amarillo Bulls want to do their part to help prevent bullying from becoming a problem in the schools and playgrounds across the Texas Panhandle, and have created the Bulls Against Bullying Program.

Bulls Vice President and General Manager Rick Matchett says they want to get the players involved in the schools, and explain to the children what bullying is.

"Some children don't know what bullying is and if they say something rude to somebody they think nothing about it," he said. "Those are the things that cut deep on other children so we want to make sure they are aware of it."

As part of the Bulls Against Bullying Program, Bulls players and staff will be speaking to students at assemblies. The program includes definition of Bullying, what the children should do if they are being bullied and an interactive score a goal against bullying. The response the Bulls have had from Amarillo Independent School District (AISD) and Canyon Independent School District (CISD) has been overwhelming with several schools making arrangements.

"We are giving the children an opportunity to sign a pledge card that the teachers will have in the classroom to say I am not going to bully," said Matchett. "We are going to take those pledge cards and display them at the Amarillo Civic Center so when the children come to a game they can see an impact they are making."

Matchett said they want the children to understand what takes place on the ice in a controlled environment.

"When they see it they think that hockey is a violent game but it's just like any sport whether football or basketball and they are going to push and shove," he said. "The children need to know the difference when they are at home and in the schools. It's important that when a child is being bullied that they go to the school administration or principal and tell them what is going on."

The Amarillo Bulls hit the road this weekend for a pair of games in Rio Grande Valley against the Killer Bees at State Farm Arena. The doubleheader is set for Friday at 7 pm and again Saturday at 6:35 pm. The Wayland Baptist University Warm Up Show begins coverage on both nights, 15 minutes before the puck is dropped.

Hockey is back at the Budweiser Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center as the Amarillo Bulls host the Topeka RoadRunners on Friday, Nov. 1 and Saturday, Nov. 2 at 7 pm. On Friday it's United Way Night and the first 500 fans will receive a magnet schedule, while Saturday is $1 hotdogs.
