Bullpen Implodes, Sharks Lose 14-8

June 16, 2014 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Wilmington Sharks News Release

Jon Olczak got the starting nod for Wilmington (9-9), tossing six complete innings of beautiful baseball. Olczak exited the game with his Sharks leading 2-0, surrendering just one hit and striking out nine Gastonia (11-4) batters. The bullpen was not able to hold the lead for very long at all.

Kevin Husum emerged in the seventh, giving up four runs on five hits and two walks. Ryan Manore was not able to stop the bleeding in the eighth, allowing five runs on five hits, two walks, and two hit batsmen.

The two Sharks runs came in the bottom of the third inning. Steven Linkous reached base safely after legging out a groundball to second base, who tagged Husum for one before tossing to first. Linkous stole second base, bringing his total to thirteen steals in as many attempts. Nate Moorhouse ripped a changeup up the middle, knocking in Linkous in from second. Alex Raburn reached base on a walk, and later scored on a Mike Montville sacrifice fly to deep center field. Additionally, Sam Foy went 2-4 on the night with two singles.

Catcher Jake Kusz showcased his big arm in the game, catching two Gastonia runners stealing. Coming into the game Monday night, Gastonia was second place in the Coastal Plain League for steal attempts, but after Kusz showed what he was capable of, the Grizzlies began to tone down their aggression.

Wilmington travels to Fayetteville Tuesday and to Morehead City Wednesday before returning to the Shark Tank on Thursday to play the Marlins.
