Five-Run Inning Helps Wilson to 7-3 Victory over Morehead City

Morehead City Marlins News Release
WILSON, N.C- A five-run third inning was the difference maker on Monday night as the Wilson Tobs used the crooked inning to take a 5-1 lead en route to a 7-3 victory against Morehead City.
The big inning came off of Marlins' starter Adam Aldred, who lasted just 2.2 innings and allowed those five runs - all of which were earned - on eight hits. Four of those hits came in that third inning.
Aldred started the third frame with an out, getting Matt Rembielak to fly out to center, but it fell apart quickly for him after that. Adam Pate tripled, Drew Cole walked, and Matthew Parrish and Seth LaRue both followed with RBI singles. That brought the CPL RBI leader Ben Schmucker to the dish, and he was able to come through again with a double to score the third run of the game. Aldred was able to get a strikeout, but Charlie Yorgen put the exclamation point on the big inning with a two-run single.
"He was leaving some ball up and catching too much of the plate, but that is baseball," said head coach Sam Carel. "He is going to learn from that and will have a great start next week."
It was a stark contrast from Aldred's last start, when he allowed three runs in seven strong innings while striking out eight. That start came almost two weeks ago, back on June 3 against High Point Thomasville - the day of the Marlins' only win this season.
Morehead City would not be able to recover, despite getting runners on base in every inning of the game. They had 12 hits, but managed only three runs as they stranded 14 runners on base in the game.
Part of the reason for those stranded runners was Tobs' starter Braden Bristo, who effectively worked himself out of trouble in just about every inning. Bristo allowed a one-out base runner in the first, put two runners on base in the fifth and sixth and did not have a 1-2-3 inning all game, but still managed to limit the Marlins. He worked six innings, scattering eight hits and allowing just the two runs (one earned) while walking one and striking out two.
"We talked about it after the game," Carel said. "This team is really close to taking off, they just need to do two things - get some quality starts on the mound, and come up with some clutch two-out hitting. We are having good at bats and we are hitting the ball well. Quality starts and clutch hitting and we are going to take off."
The Marlins' three runs came in the second, sixth and ninth innings. Luke Tewes was hit by a pitch with one out in the second and came around to score on an error by the shortstop Rembielak. In the sixth, Blake Graham knocked in his fourth run of the season to make it a 7-2 game, while Eduardo Castro drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the ninth.
Matt Simmons, Quincy Nieporte, Nick Lombardi and Kyle Carroll all had multi-hit games for Morehead City in the loss.
The Morehead City bullpen was strong in its 5.1 innings of work. Whitman Barnes allowed a run in his two innings but struck out four, while Logan Hershenow and Casey Eskew each threw a scoreless inning. The other Tobs' run came off John Holland, who was making his debut for the Marlins.
Morehead City has now lost all three games against Wilson this season, and has lost 11 straight contests. They fall to 1-17 on the season.
The Marlins will be in action again Wednesday after an off day on Tuesday, when they host the Wilmington Sharks at Big Rock Stadium. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
