Sanford Mainers News Release
DANBURY, Ct. - The Mainers jumped out to their first lead of the season early, but a three-run fifth inning put the Danbury Westerners on top, they would tack on a few more insurance runs en route to the win, 6-3.
Quinn McDaniel (Maine) got the party started at Rogers Park in the top of the third with a two-run round-tripper over the right-field fence, 2-0. It was the first home run for Sanford and its first lead of the season.
Jacob Marshall (Le Moyne) started on the mound and was in control early on but ran into trouble in the fifth. A leadoff walk, a hit by pitch, and a pair of wild pitches put the Westerners on the board, 2-1.
A pitching change brought Zackary Rodgers (UMass Lowell) into the game and the struggles continued. An RBI single by Jackson Taylor (Indiana State) tied the game at 2, and then a passed ball brought Sam Mongelli (Sacred Heart) home and put Danbury on top, 3-2.
The Westerners would add another in sixth as Hank Thomas (Ohio State) scored on a wild pitch. Then, in the eighth, a ground ball by Aries Samek (Clemson) took a strange hop over David Bermudez (Manhattan) and into the outfield bringing in two more runs, 6-2.
Sanford got one back in the ninth, off the sac fly from Adam Dapkewicz (Georgetown), bringing in Alex Knapp (George Mason), but the Mainers would ultimately fall in Danbury.
The win improves the Westerners to 2-0, while Sanford drops to 0-2 on the year.
The Mainers are back at it again tomorrow in Norwich, Connecticut, taking on the Mystic Schooners, first pitch is set for approximately noon from Dodd Memorial Stadium.
Jake Poindexter is the probable starter for Sanford, while Jake Noviello is expected to be on the bump for the Schooners.
