Green Bay, Wis. - Make that three in a row for the Bullfrogs as they take down the Duluth Huskies 3-0. Behind another strong pitching performance, the Bullfrogs were able to shutout an opponent for the second time in the last three ballgames. This win moves the Bullfrogs to 10-7 in the second half.
The game began with three straight scoreless innings before either team was able to push across a run. The Bullfrogs drew blood first as they scored a run in the top of the third inning. Parker Coss (UC-Irvine) led the inning off with a base hit to centerfield but was erased from the base paths after a fielder ' s choice by Marcus Shoemaker (Lenoir Rhyne). Shoemaker reached second on an error by shortstop Brendan McClary (Columbia Basin) and then proceeded to steal third. After a Quincy Nieporte (Florida State) and a Hill Alexander (Midland) shallow fly ball, Jonah Davis (UC-Berkeley) stepped to the plate. The outfielder remained hot as he sent a single up the middle to score Shoemaker.
Connor Hock (Notre Dame) continued the string of good starts from Bullfrogs starting pitchers. The right-hander in his first start went six scoreless innings, allowed just five hits and struck out two Huskies. In his first appearance on the mound for the Bullfrogs, Blake Rutherford (St. Norbert) went an inning and allowed one hit and kept the Huskies off the scoreboard.
The Bullfrogs would tack on a couple of runs in the eighth to extend their lead to three runs. With runners at first and second after a Coss double and walk by Nieporte, Laren Eustace (Indiana) pinched hit for Alexander. Eustace hit a ground ball to the first baseman Dillon Paulson (USC), Paulson threw it over the head of the covering pitcher Ian Schwickert (St. Thomas) and Coss came around and scored. Now with runners at second and third with one out, Davis hit a sac fly to score Nieporte from third.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Huskies threatened to push across runs. The Huskies loaded the bases without recording a hit. Jeremy Graf (Flagler) entered the ballgame in hopes to minimize the damage. The first batter he faces was a pinch hitter Matt Brown (Jefferson College). Brown smokes a line drive right at second baseman Matt Hoeg (Iowa Western CC), Hoeg made the catch and tag second base to double up Paulson. Graf was able to get Casey Moses (Texas Wesleyan) to ground out to end the inning without allowing a run to score.
Graf came back out for the ninth looking for a six out save and his third save of the season. After hitting the leadoff batter Brendan McClary (Columbia Basin) and walking Moses, Graf settled down an stuck out Daniel Amaral (UCLA). With one out, Austin Bernard struck out and Brian Lees (Southeast Missouri State) threw out McClary trying to steal third to end the ballgame.
Hock picked up his first victory in a Bullfrogs uniform. Chris Botsoe (Louisville) finished with three hits and Coss finished with two.
The Bullfrogs go for the sweep tomorrow as they face the Huskies. Andrew Mahoney (Mississippi State) gets the start for the Bullfrogs. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 pm.
