Green Bay, Wis. - The Bullfrogs opened up the 2014 season at Joannes Stadium on Tuesday against the Battle Creek Bombers under new ownership, a new coach, and plenty of new players. Despite a comeback to tie the game at five in the fifth inning and a near comeback in the ninth inning, the Bombers went on to score five out of the game's next nine runs and win the season opener by a score of 10-9.

Roberto Baroniel (Nova Southeastern) took the hill for the Bullfrogs (0-1) and pitched a scoreless first inning before the Bombers plated five runs in the top half of the second inning. David Richards IV started things with an RBI single, before Sam Koening added a two-run home run and Brandon Van Horn knocked in a two-run single in the second inning for Battle Creek to make it 5-0.

Luke Watson (UW-Stevens Point) took over for Baroniel in the top of the third and shut down Battle Creek giving up just one hit while striking out six over three innings.

The Bullfrogs finally got to Battle Creek in the top of the fifth inning after Bomber starting pitcher Austen Thrailkill pitched the first four innings and did not surrender a run or a hit to the Bullfrogs.

In the fifth inning, Dean Long (Emporia State) recorded the first hit for the Bullfrogs and drove in the first run of the game for Green Bay. Jamie Ritchie (Belmont) added the second run for the Bullfrogs on a sacrifice fly. Dane Hutcheon (Montevallo) added to the scoring with a two-run single and Ivan Vieitez (Lenoir-Rhyne) finished the inning with an infield single that scored Jimmy Coady (UW-Stevens Point) from second.

Vieitez and Hutcheon led the Bullfrogs with Vieitez going 4-for-8 with three runs scored and two RBIs while Hutcheon went 3-for-7 with two runs and two RBIs.

Battle Creek would tack on three more runs to break up the 5-5 tie in the top of the sixth inning, and added two more in the seventh inning against Bullfrog pitcher, Josh Glick (Nova Southeastern).

Green Bay responded in the bottom of the seventh with a Ryan Koziol (Gulf Coast State) sacrifice fly that plated Hutcheon.

The Bullfrogs narrowed the four-run gap in the bottom half of the ninth inning after Jack Hall (Western Nevada) ripped a single to right that scored John Soteropolous (California) who led the inning off with a pinch-hit double. A Dean Long double would pull the score to within two at 10-8, before Dennis Colon (Illinois State) scored on a wild pitch to make the score 10-9.

Following walks to Ritchie and Matt Beaty (Belmont), the Bullfrogs had the bases loaded with Dan Sabin (North Park) at the dish. However, Sabin would ground out to second base to end the game and end the Bullfrogs' final-inning rally. Josh Jimenez picked up the win for the Bombers while Glick suffered the loss for the Bullfrogs.

The Bombers finished with ten runs on ten hits and one error, while the Bullfrogs finished with nine runs on nine hits and two errors.

The Bullfrogs and Bombers will square off again on Wednesday at Joannes Stadium with first pitch coming at 7:05.
