Brantford Bulldogs News Release
HAMILTON, ONTARIO. Finishing up their season 8-game road trip, the Hamilton Bulldogs faced off with the Peterborough Petes on Thursday. The Petes, sitting in the 8th place in the Eastern Conference with just a 3-point gap in the over the 9th place Sudbury Wolves games into the game flying, tossing 12 shots to Marco Costantini's goal in the opening frame, all of which Costantini turned aside. The Bulldogs had their chances including Brenden Anderson nearly tucking a a short side shot home but it wasn't until 49 seconds remained in the first period that the ice was broken. Nathan Staios fed a flying Mason McTavish up the right wing, with the gifted goal scorer unleashing a writer at the bottom of the right circle to give the Bulldogs the 1-0 lead through 20 minutes of play.
Peterborough got the game knotted immediately in the second period as a goal mouth scramble led to Chase Stillman feeding Tucker Robertson to tie the game just 15 seconds into the period 1-1. From that point the Bulldogs took over, Avery Hayes fed the puck out of the right wing corner to Mason McTavish and back further to Gavin White rocketing a shot past Simpson for his 9th of the season at 1:22 giving the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead. The lead doubled at 6:06 on a goal mouth scramble for the Bulldogs started by Logan Morrison, captured by Ryan Humphrey and fed onto Hayes for his 35th of the year, making it 3-1 Hamilton. Jan Mysak joined the 30-goal club just over a minute at 7:24 as George Diaco fed Lawson Sherk, carrying the puck behind the Peterborough net and playing for Mysak out front to make it 4-1 Bulldogs. The offensive explosion continued at 13:31 as Lucas Moore snuck down from the right point taking a Lawson Sherk feed and beating Simpson 5-hole for his 3rd of the year and a 5-1 lead, with Patrick Thomas garnering the secondary assist. Before the period was out the Petes clawed one back as Tucker Robertson's hard work to get Sam Alfano the puck at the side of the Bulldogs goal paid off making it 5-2 at 19:40, a score line that held up to the second intermission.
After Joe Carroll fell on top of Marco Costantini in a second period goal mouth scramble, Matteo Drobac entered the game for the Bulldogs to start the 3rd period and continued right where his battery mate left off, stopping all 12 shots he faced. The only goal of the final frame came courtesy of Avery Hayes, his 36th of the year and second of the game off a criss-cross play in the right wing circle with George Diaco and Logan Morrison picking up the secondary assist, giving the Bulldogs the 6-2 victory. The Bulldogs tie the Hamilton OHL/OHA record for wins in a season with 43, joining the 2017-18 Bulldogs and 1975-76 Fincups, both of whom went on to win the J. Ross Robertson Cup.
The Hamilton Bulldogs return home on Thursday March 31st, hosting the Oshawa Generals at FirstOntario Centre with a 7:00pm start time.
