Brewster Bulldogs News Release
Brewster, NY - The Bulldogs had a mission tonight, and that was to continue their strong play from their previous game against Danville and turn it into a victory over their territorial rival Danbury Titans. After a great start, the Bulldogs struggled to hold the lead and it took overtime for Brewster to dispatch the Titans.
Nathan Judd-Warren would start the scoring, 14 minutes into the 1st period off a shot from the point that ended up between Nick Niedert's legs for the opening goal. With a 12-11 shot differential, it was a very even 1st period. However in the 2nd, Brewster was off to the races. Marcus Mitchell would score a huge power play goal off a rebound to give Brewster a 2-0 lead, then minutes later, Dan Loughlin made it three to nothing. The Bulldogs had the game well in hand until Danbury decided they had enough and got on the offensive. After not scoring on the first three power play opportunities, Phil Bronner but that drought to bed with a pass reception from Matt Caranci on the doorstep to make it 3-1. Less than 3 minutes later, Frank Schumacher found the back of the net to make it 3-2. Suddenly, the pressure was on for Brewster. Then with less than 5 minutes to ago, on another power play, it was Phil Bronner scoring once again to tie things up at 3 a piece. It was a back and forth battle in the overtime period, and was only a minute and change from going to a shootout. Then Ryan Dolance found his opportunity, carried the puck to the net and put it past Nick Niedert to win the game for Brewster in overtime, 4-3. And now with the Bulldogs winning two of three games against Danbury so far this season, perhaps now people will rethink writing down the Bulldogs as just another squad, and thinking of them as now perhaps being worthy of being recognized as a match for the Danbury Titans, perhaps even better than the Titans. Time will only tell as the season goes on, but these two teams continue to form an intense rivalry against one another that will be entertaining to observe throughout the season.
For Brewster, Marcus Mitchell had a goal and 2 assists, Nathan Judd-Warren, Ryan Dolance, and Dan Loughlin each had a goal, captain Mike Zanella had 4 assists, and James Robbins had a stellar performance in goal, stopping 43 of 46 shots for the victory. For Danbury, Phil Bronner had two goals, Frank Schumacher with one goal, and Matt Caranci and Zach Tatrn with two assists each. Nick Niedert stopped 26 of 30 shots for the loss.
The Brewster Bulldogs hit the road next weekend, their next contest being on Friday night in Danville against the now 4-0 Dashers. The Titans hit the road tonight and play in Berlin tomorrow against the River Drivers. The attendance at Brewster Ice Arena for tonight's contest was 235.
