Buffalo Bisons News Release

April 3, 2008 - The Buffalo Bisons used two big innings to jump out to an early lead, cruising past the Tides 9-4 on a rainy Opening Night from Harbor Park.

Buffalo jumped on Norfolk starter Hayden Penn (0-1) in the first inning, as the Bisons sent seven men to the plate en route to plating three runs. The big blow of the inning was a two-out, two-run triple to center field by third baseman Aaron Herr which plated Jordan Brown and Ryan Mulhern, both of whom had singled.

Penn retired nine of the next 11 batters he faced, but the 23-year-old right hander ran into trouble in the fifth inning. Josh Barfield led off the frame with a single, and after a fielders choice by Jason Tyner, Ben Francisco and Brown recorded back-to-back singles to load the bases with one out. Ryan Mulhern then clubbed an opposite field bases-clearing double off the right field wall, chasing Penn and giving the Bisons a 7-0 lead. Buffalo would add two more unearned runs in the frame off of Lance Cormier to build a 9-0 lead.

Tides second baseman Eider Torres led Norfolk's 14-hit attack with a three-hit night, while Tike Redman, Luis Terrero, Chris Roberson, Chris Heintz and Sebastien Boucher each added two base hits apiece.

Barfield led the Bisons attack with four hits, while Brown added three hits and an RBI in the win.

Buffalo starter Aaron Laffey (1-0) picked up the win, allowing an unearned run on six hits in 5.0 innings of work. The 22-year-old southpaw walked one and struck out five.

Norfolk and Buffalo continue their opening four-game set with a 7:15 contest Friday night from Harbor Park. Southpaw Garrett Olson is slated to take the hill for the Tides, while the Bisons are scheduled to counter with right-hander Sean Smith.
