Buffalo Destroyers News Release

(BUFFALO, NY) – The Buffalo Destroyers announced today they have signed free agents OL/DL Nigel Tharpe and OL/DL Jon Michals. The Destroyers also signed QB Chris Sanders and WR/DB Hassan Probherbs to the active roster from the practice squad.

Tharpe (6-4, 290, Iowa State) was in training camp with the Seattle Seahawks in 2002 before being cut on the final day of camp. He played for the Frankfurt Galaxy of NFL Europe in the spring of 2002 finishing with 13 tackles, one sack, two pass breakups and two forced fumbles as a defensive tackle. Tharpe originally signed as a rookie free agent with the Pittsburgh Steelers and was in training camp in 2001. He was signed to the Seahawks practice squad December 19, 2001 where he finished the 2001 season.

Michals (6-4, 275, Minnesota) was in training camp with the Tampa Bay Storm earlier this season. He was on the Storm's exempt list for the 2002 season after being selected in the seventh round of the NFL Europe 2002 free agent draft by the Frankfurt Galaxy. Michals was in training camp with the New York Jets in 2001 and spent the 2000 season on the Jets practice squad after signing as a rookie free agent.

Sanders (6-2, 215, Tennessee-Chattanooga) originally signed to the practice squad prior to week one. He was elevated to the active roster week four after starting QB Jeff Loots went down with a separated shoulder. He returned to the practice squad week six. Sanders has suited up for each game this season as either the backup QB or emergency QB but has not seen any action.

Probherbs (6-0, 200, Portland St.) signed to the Destroyers practice squad last week. He was on the Destroyers roster for the last four games of the 2002 season but did not dress. He appeared in two games for the Georgia Force in 2002 catching three passes for eight yards and had 6.5 tackles. Probherbs played his rookie campaign with Buffalo in 2001 appearing in nine games with 18 receptions for 261 yards and four touchdowns. He registered 21 tackles, a pass defense and a fumble recovery as well.
