Laredo Bucks News Release
LAREDO, Texas â The 2004 CHL President's Cup Champion Laredo Bucks announced today that they have signed defensemen Phillippe Lauze, Malcolm Hutt and Brandon Janes to contracts for the 2004-05 CHL season. For Laredo Bucks season or single game tickets call (956)-718-BUCKS (2825) or log onto www.laredobucks.com.
Lauze, who is 6'2" 225-pounds, played five years of major junior hockey in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League with the Rimouski Oceanic. This past season he totaled a career high six goals, 18 assists and 24 points to go with 124 PIMs in 68 games.
"He has good size and was a captain in Rimouski," said Bucks head coach Terry Ruskowski. "I like recruiting captains because they know how to lead and you never have to worry about them. He moves the puck well and is a physical player. He can handle the point on the power play and he comes up into the play when he has to."
Lauze, who is from Montreal, Quebec, helped lead Rimouski to the QMJHL playoffs three of the last four years.
Hutt, 5'11" 170-pounds, spent last season with the Peoria Rivermen and the Alaska Aces in the ECHL. In 48 combined games he had one goal and six assists.
"He is a very steady defenseman who moves the puck very well," said Ruskowski. "Malcolm played major junior hockey and had good numbers there. Plus he has some experience in the ECHL which is what I was looking for."
Hutt, who is from Wellesley, Ontario, played four years of major junior hockey with the Belleville Bulls of the Ontario Hockey League. He was a teammate of Bucks forward Adam Paiement while in Belleville.
Janes, from Richmond, British Columbia, spent two games last season overseas in Germany. His last full season was in 2000-01 with the Chilliwack Chiefs of the British Columbia Hockey League.
"He has proven to be a very offensive minded defenseman," said Ruskowski. "He anticipates the play very well. He isn't big in stature, but he's big in ability."
Janes is 5'9" 170-pounds. His first three years of junior hockey were spent with the Lethbridge Hurricanes of the Western Hockey League. In his final junior season he had nine goals and 41 points in 42 games with Chilliwack.
Training camp for the Bucks opens on Monday, October 11th. The Bucks host an exhibition game at the LEC on October 17th against the Mexican National Ice Hockey Team.
