Bucks Comeback Falls Short In Austin: MacSween Nets Hat Trick

AUSTIN, TX- The Laredo Bucks of the Central Hockey League fell to the Austin Ice Bats 4-3 Thursday night in a pre-season game at the Chaparral Ice Arena.

The Bucks (1-1 pre-season) fell behind the Bats 4-0 early in the second period when they started their comeback. Rookie forward Brent MacSween helped his case to make the team, netting a hat-trick. All three of MacSween's goals were on the power play. MacSween has now scored four goals in the Bucks two pre-season games.

MacSween's first power-play goal came late in the second period (19:07), cutting the Bats (1-0 pre-season) lead to 4-1. Captain Serge Dube and Shawn Doucet picked up the assists.

The Bucks came out strong at the start of the third period with MacSween netting his second straight power play goal at the four-minute mark. Chris Korchinski picked up the assist. MacSween and the Bucks cut the Bats lead to 4-3 at the 13:12 mark of the third, when he notched his third-straight power-play goal with Tyler Harder and Dube picking up assists. Dube tallied two assists on the evening.

Austin jumped out to a 4-0 lead, netting three goals in the first period with Zech Klann (power-play goal at 3:02), Matt Stang (unassisted goal at 5:51), and Henry Kuster (shorthanded goal at 10:40) scoring in the first frame for Austin. Kuster picked up a goal and an assist in the game. The Bats extended their lead to 4-0 as John Neal scored at 2:02 of the second period, chasing Bucks starting goalie Kyle Knetchel. Knetchel stopped 10 of the 14 shots he faced. Kevin Beech took over for Knetchel and stopped all seven shots that came his way.

The two division foes combined for 249 penalty minutes, with the Bucks receiving 110, and the Bats 139. The two teams also combined for 15 major penalties and 12 misconducts. The Bucks and Bats will wrap up the pre-season schedule Friday night in College Station.
