
Bucks' Comeback Falls Short in a Shoot-Out

LAREDO, TX: The Laredo Bucks, of the Central Hockey League, fell to the Allen Americans 5-4 in a shoot-out.
The Laredo Bucks and Allen Americans met for the second straight night at the Laredo Energy Arena Saturday night. Laredo won the last four games versus the Americans, including a 3-2 win Friday night.
The opening period of the game was quiet until the halfway point when things once again got physical between the two teams. Laredo Bucks' Justin Styffe went toe to toe with Allen Americans' Ben Wilson. Shortly after the fisticuffs the Bucks penalty kill went to work, successfully killing off the Matt Hanson holding minor. The Bucks powerplay unit had two opportunities during the period, but were unable to capitalize on the man advantages. The Bucks were outshot by the Americans 13-7.
The Americans would take advantage of a Laredo Bucks penalty early in the middle frame. Justin Styffe was called for roughing only 12 seconds into the period. The Americans were able to knock in a powerplay goal 30 seconds into the second, giving them a 1-0 lead. The Bucks fought back and tied the game at 1:55, when David Inman put it over the stick-side shoulder for the netminder. Ryan Sparling assisted on the goal that tied the game 1-1. The rest of the period the Allen offense took over scoring an even strength goal at 6:38 and another powerplay goal at 17:06. The two goals gave the Americans a 3-1 lead. Laredo was outshot 18-9 by Allen in the period.
The Bucks offense came alive in the third period to start a comeback for Laredo. Adam Rivet scored on unassisted goal only 1:11 into the period, closing the Allen lead to only one goal. Trevor Hunt shot a blast from the point over the glove-side of the Allen goalie at 7:10. The powerplay goal tied the game 3-3. Hunt was assisted by Ryan Sparling and Rusty Masters. The Americans regained the lead at 11:48, making the score 4-3. Allen Americans' Mark Nebus was called for an illegal hit to the head giving the Bucks a 5 minute powerplay at 17:55. The Bucks pulled Ryan Rondeau from net with less than two minutes left in the game. Matt Boyd was able to knock in a rebound scoring the game tying goal at 18:55. The game was still tied 4-4 at the end of regulation.
The Bucks were still on the powerplay for most of the extra five minutes of overtime play, but were unable to score. Neither team was able to score in the extra frame forcing the teams into a shoot-out. The Americans were able to beat the Bucks in the best of five, scoring two goals giving them a 5-4 win over Laredo.
