HIDALGO, TX- The Laredo Bucks of the Central Hockey League shutout the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees 1-0 Thursday night at the Dodge Arena. With the win the Bucks snap a two-game losing streak, and improve to 23-13-4 (50pts). Laredo remains 10 points behind Texas for first place in the Southeast Division.
Bucks All-Star goaltender Sebastien Centomo picked up his second shutout of the season, and his 18th of his professional career as he stopped all 28 Killer Bee shots in net.
Bobby Russell scored the only goal of the game 6:30 into the third period, as he took a pass from Jason Dixon and sent a wrist shot in from the left circle past Bees netminder Christian Boucher. The goal was Russell's eigth of the year, with Dixon picking up his 18th assist.
The Bucks scored first for just the fifth time in their last 16 games.
The Bees pulled Boucher for the final minute of the game to try and tie the game with an extra attacker, but the Bucks ran out the clock for the win.
Laredo is now 2-7-3 in their last 12 road games, and picked up their first win of the year at the Dodge Arena (1-4).
The first period between the Bucks and Killer Bees (19-18-4, 42pts) was scoreless, as neither team could get on the board.
The Bucks were outshot in the opening 20 minutes 6-5.
Both defenses came up big in the second period as well, as neither team was able to score.
Centomo stopped three Killer Bee breakaway's in the second period to keep the game scoreless after 40 minutes of play.
Laredo began the second period killing off a Killer Bee's two-man advantage for 1:09, with Centomo poke-checking away a breakaway attempt by Grant Goeckner-Zellar early in the Rio' power-play.
The Bucks were outshot in the second period 14-13.
Boucher set aside 26 of 27 Bucks shots to suffer the loss.
Laredo was outshot for the game 28-27.
The Bucks will return home Friday January 30th, when they host the Killer Bees in a Southeast Division match up. There will be a post game skate after the game. Group tickets start at just $10, call 718-BUCK (2825) to order.
