February 10, 2008 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Laredo Bucks News Release
LAREDO, TX- The Laredo Bucks of the Cental Hockey League fell to the Austin Ice Bats 4-3 in a shootout Sunday afternoon in front of 3,027 fans at the Laredo Entertainment Center.
The loss sent the Bucks to a 0-2-1 weekend against the Ice Bats, but they gained a point Sunday to increase their Southern Conference lead to six points over Arizona (63 to 57).
The Bucks (30-15-3) lost despite outshooting the Ice Bats 47 to 22
The shootout was an epic seven round affair with the Ice Bats winning 2-1.
R.G Flath gave Austin (19-26-1, 39 points) the lead in the third round of the shootout as he beat Bucks goaltender Dustin Traylen. Chris Korchinski tied the shootout up in the fifth round as he beat Austin goaltender Miguel Beaudry. In the seventh round John Neal beat Traylen to give Austin a 2-1 lead in the shootout. With Laredo needing a goal to keep their hopes alive Igor Agarunov sent his attempt high and wide of Beaudry, ending the Bucks weekend of frustration.
Trailing 2-1 entering the third period Laredo tied the game at 2-2 just 2:34 in. Jeff Bes scored his second goal of the game, and 31st of the season from the right circle past Beaudry. Steve Weidlich, who was playing in his first game since December 12th, and Gord Burnett picked up assists on Bes' goal.
Austin would re-take the lead 3-2 at the 4:13 mark when Kurtis Kisio sent a wrist shot past Traylen from the top of the left circle.
The Bucks battled back to tie the game at 3-3 at the 9:45 mark of the third period. With Laredo shorthanded, Adam Rivet sent a backhander from the right side of the crease past Beaudry. Rivet's 15th goal of the season was Laredo's CHL-leading 14th shorthanded tally.
Meeting for the third time in as many days the Ice Bats jumped out in front of the Bucks at the 4:13 mark of the first period. Mike Bartlett skated past the blue line and sent a slap shot from the top of the right circle over the shoulder of Traylen. The goal was Bartlett's 13th goal of the season.
Even though the Bucks (19-5-1 at home) trailed on the scoreboard, they outshot the Ice Bats in the first 20 minutes 13-10, with Traylen stopping nine of 10 Ice Bat shots, while Beaudry set aside all 13 Laredo attempts.
The two teams each went 0-1 on the power-play in the opening period.
Austin made it 2-0 just 16 seconds into the second period, as Brendan Cook sent an innocent looking pass from the left corner towards the crease, and took an Ice Bats bounce past Traylen into the net. Cool, the Ice Bats leading scorer, netted his 20th goal of the season.
Laredo cut the Austin lead in half to 2-1, when they broke through on a five-on-three power play. Jeff Bes took the puck at the top of the right circle, then skated to the bottom of the circle just outside the slot before sending the puck past Beaudry's shoulder for his 30th goal of the season. Matt Summers and Andrew Desjardins picked up assists on Bes' tally.
Laredo dominated in shots on goal in the second period, outshooting the Ice Bats 14-3.
With the win Austin moved ahead of Amarillo for the fifth playoff spot in the Southern Conference.
Beaudry picked up the win in net for Austin, setting aside 44 of 47 Bucks shots, while Traylen suffered the loss in the shootout, stopping 19 of 22 Ice Bats attempts. Beaudry won all three games between the pipes for Austin this weekend, while Traylen was 0-1-1.
Along with Weidlich making his long awaited return, the Bucks also had all-star defenseman Serge Dube back in the line up Sunday. Dube missed Friday and Saturday's games in Austin with a stomach virus.
The Bucks will face the CHL trading deadline Monday at 3pm, and then go on a three game road trip starting Tuesday at Rio Grande Valley, then continuing Friday at Corpus Christi, before the re-match with the Killer Bees on Saturday.
