Austin Bruins News Release
For the first time since the Central Division Finals in April (and the only weekend this year), the Austin Bruins hosted their biggest rival, Bismarck, at Riverside Arena Friday. The home fans left happy after the Bruins (7-2-4) doubled up the Bobcats (6-7-0) 4-2.
Austin heavily outshot Bismarck all night, but ran into a brick wall time and time again in that of goaltender Alex Bitsakis (Montreal, Quebec). However, Jake Arroyo s (Bolingbrook, IL) wrist shot through a screen put the Bruins on the board first at 7:04 of the first period. The Bruins struggling power-play gave up a short-handed goal shortly thereafter, when Matt Perry (Lakeville, MN) poked a puck away from a Bruins defenseman and beat goaltender Zach Driscoll (Apple Valley, MN - St. Cloud State) on the short-side. The Bruins outshot the Bobcats 22-7 in the period, but the game was tied heading to the second.
Perry picked up his second of the night early in the frame to give Bismarck their only lead, but late in the period, Trevor Boyd (Muskegon, MI) finished up a 3-on-1 rush with his second goal of the season to even the score at the second intermission.
Bitsakis and Driscoll both made some huge saves in the first 12 minutes of the third period, but Jacob Kullberg (Kallered, Sweden) snapped a one-timer in for the game-winning goal after Nico Sturm (Augsberg, Germany) beat an icing and centered the pass. Kullberg added an empty-netter later for his sixth of the season as the Bruins finished off the win. Driscoll stopped 19 shots in the win, while Bitsakis turned away 45 of the Bruins 49 attempts in the defeat.
The two teams will meet one final time in the regular season Saturday night at 7:05pm at Riverside Arena and oddly won't meet again until the playoffs if they happen to cross paths.
