Austin Bruins News Release
If the Central Division standings hold true through the last five weekends of the season, the Austin Bruins and Aberdeen Wings would meet for in the playoffs for the first time.
Friday night at Riverside Arena in Austin, the Bruins (30-10-11) downed the Wings (23-25-2) 3-2 in a potential preview of the division semifinals.
Both teams generated their fair share of scoring chances in the opening period, but Austin s Jake Kielly (Eden Prairie, MN) and Aberdeen s Andrew Shortridge (Eagle River, AK - Quinnipiac) were up to the task. The Bruins broke the scoreless tie at 7:46 of the period on a terrific cross-crease pass from Tony Uglem (Moorhead, MN) to Luke Dietsch (St. Paul, MN). Dietsch had all kinds of time to shoot the puck into the open net to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
Austin controlled the play for much of the second period, and added to its lead at 10:07 of the frame when Jacob Kullberg (Kallered, Sweden) sent a deflected wrist shot from the high slot into the top shelf. Aberdeen caught Austin on a line change two minutes later and cut into the lead. Tucker DeYoung s (Lake Bluff, IL) shot from the right circle was kicked out to the backside by Kielly and Colin Raver (Bartlett, IL) put away the rebound.
As the second period clock wound down, it was the Bruins turn to catch the Wings on a change. Cory Dunn (Trenton, MI) picked off a pass at the Austin blue line and head-manned the puck up to Josh Wilkins (Cary, NC) on a breakaway. Wilkins slid the backhander through the five-hole of Shortridge to make it 3-1.
Early in the third, Aberdeen kept it interesting when the Wings won a battle along the boards and sprung Austin Heakins (Mars, PA) on a breakaway. Heakins lifted the puck over the left pad of Kielly to cut their deficit to one. The Bruins withstood Aberdeen s comeback efforts the rest of the way through the third period to grab their 30th win of the season. Kielly stopped 19 shots in the victory, his 18th as a Bruin.
The Bruins and Wings will meet one final time in the regular season Saturday night in Austin at 7:05pm. The game can be seen on fasthockey.com, with coverage starting at 6:55.
