Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release

One day before the Texas Winter League season begins, a local product from Brownsville has signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks organization.

Henry Garcia, a 5-10 lefthander who has pitched for Porter High School, Texas-Brownsville/Southmost, and the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings was signed before the Texas Winter League season based on his workouts this weekend.

"I'm really excited, but it hasn't really hit me yet," Garcia said.

Garcia showed pinpoint control with the WhiteWings last season, walking only six batters in 44 1/3 innings with a 3.02 ERA.

At Porter, Garcia led the Cowboys to the state playoffs both seasons. He won 12 games as a junior in 2007 with a 0.38 ERA, striking out 123 in 89 innings, earning All-Metro MVP honors.

In his senior prep season Garcia was 8-2 with an 0.47 ERA as a senior and was named Valley MVP by local media following his senior year.

Garcia also sported an impressive 2.16 ERA at Northeast Texas Community College before transferring to UT-Brownsville/Southmost, turning professional in 2011.

Longtime WhiteWings manager Eddie Dennis said Garcia was "the best I've seen in the Valley" last season. His fastball has been clocked in the low-90s.

Garcia has also pitched professionally in Mexico, sporting a 2-0 record for Chihuahua before joining the WhiteWings last season.

The Texas Winter League season begins tomorrow, Feb. 5, at 11 a.m. with a game between Garcia's Edinburg Roadrunners and the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings, who will have locals Rolando Zamarripa of Harlingen, Danny Gidora of Harlingen, and William Martinez from Brownsville on their roster. The McAllen Thunder and Brownsville Stars will play at approximately 2 p.m.

Teams have taken on the names of United League franchises to add familiarity to the Texas Winter League.

Fans can attend both games for only $5 and a full concession stand will serve them. Season passes are available for $35 for all 36 games.

Games will be carried and can be heard through links on the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings' website, http://www.whitewingsbaseball.net/,as well as on http://www.texaswinterleague.com/.
