LACONIA, N.H. - Winnipesaukee Muskrats starter PJ Browne (Rutland, Mass./Merrimack) threw a complete game, leading the Muskrats past the Vermont Mountaineers, 4-2 on Friday in the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL).
Browne, who threw 146 pitches in nine innings, didn't allow an earned run and surrendered just seven hits. Browne struck out five batters and walked four.
Vermont's Davis Mikell (Williston, Vt./Castleton St.) made his second start of the year. The Vermont native gave the Mountaineers a nice outing, pitching four and one third innings. Mikell allowed one earned run on eight hits. He struck out five Winnipesauke batters and walked just two in a no-decision.
Winnipesauke got a run in the bottom half of the second with a Koby Claborn (Lubbock, Texas/Abilene Christian) solo home run, taking the 1-0 lead.
Vermont was able to tie the game at one in the top of the fourth. With two outs in the inning, Brett Malm (Medford, N.Y./Adelphi) hit a fly ball to left-center field that was dropped by the Winnipesaukee left fielder. Malm advanced to second base on the error. The next batter, Jeffery Scott (Forest, Ill./Bowling Green St.), hit a dribbler down the first base line and Muskrats catcher JD Andreesen (Brentwood, N.H./Assumption) threw the ball into right field, scoring Malm to tie up the game.
Scott, who advanced to second after David Sarmiento walked (Pembroke Pines, Fla./St. Thomas), put the Mountaineers in front 2-1 in the fourth, coming across to score on an RBI single by Bryce Aldridge (Bloomington, Ind./Wabash).
The game remained 2-1 until the seventh inning. After relieving Mikell in the fifth, Ricky DeVito (Staten Island, N.Y./Seton Hall) pitched into the seventh. The righty gave up a leadoff bunt single to Tyler Bielamowicz (Cypress, Texas/Houston) and then walked Sean Mazzio (West Chester, Pa./Wagner), making it first and second with nobody out. In a prime bunt situation to advance the runners, J.P. Sorma (Seven Hills, Ohio/Ashland) laid one down, and DeVito had an errant throw to first, which scored Bielamowicz, tying the game 2-2.
Claborn then hit a double to left-center field, bringing in Sorma, and JD Andreesen hit a sacrifice fly to increase the Winnipesauke lead to 4-2.
Devito and Kevin Kernan (Mahopac, N.Y./Stony Brook) combined for three and two-thirds innings of relief for Vermont, allowing three runs (two earned), striking out four and walking two. DeVito picked up the loss.
Browne got the win for Winnipesaukee.
The Mountaineers (6-7) will return home to Montpelier Recreation Field on Saturday. Vermont will face the North Adams SteepleCats for the third time in five days. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240-AM WSKI or online through The NECBL Broadcast Network
