Brookings Blocks Bruins' Sweep
January 3, 2015 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Austin Bruins News Release
After a road win Friday in Brookings, the Austin Bruins (18-9-8) gave one back in a 3-1 loss Saturday to the Blizzard (11-15-6) in the back-end of a home-and-home weekend series at Riverside Arena in Austin.
With only nine combined shots in the first period, Brookings tallied the game s first goal out of a net-mouth scramble at 10:42. Former Kenai River Brown Bears and Corpus Christi Ice Rays forward Nate Colwell (Engelwood, CO) bunted the puck out of the air and off the shoulder of Bruins goalie Jake Kielly (Eden Prairie, MN), before going in. It was Colwell s first goal in his first game in a Blizzard uniform.
Austin was only able to generate two shots on Brookings goaltender Ryan Kubic (St. Andrews, MB) in the opening frame, without a single quality scoring chance.
Brookings transition game led to two more goals in the second, as the Blizzard led 3-0 through two periods. First, on a 2-on-1, Zach Glienke (Eagan, MN) ripped a shot over the right shoulder of Kielly and under the crossbar to make it 2-0 at 3:12. Then after Brookings killed a late penalty on Glienke, he jumped out of the box and caught a pass in stride and beat Kielly with a backhander on a breakaway at 16:13.
The Bruins outshot the Blizzard 6-3 in the second period and 10-3 in the third, but were only able to manage one goal against Kubic. With 12:04 left in the game, Liam Feeney (Foxboro, MA) blasted a missile off the post and in from the left point for his fifth goal of the season. A late comeback effort came up short as Kubic and his defense, who blocked a ton of shots, led the Blizzard to the win and weekend split. He made 17 saves in the victory, while Kielly stopped 10 in defeat.
Next weekend, the Bruins will host division-leading Minot for two games in Austin. Friday and Saturday s games are 7:05pm scheduled starts at Riverside Arena. It will be the only time the Minotauros come to Austin this season. Both games can also be seen on fasthockey.com.
