Broncos Sneak Past WhiteWings

Laredo, TX - The first half champion Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings (49-44, 20-23) fell to the Laredo Broncos (40-54, 20-24) 4-3 tonight at Veterans Field.

The loss snaps a four game WhiteWings winning streak, while extending the Broncos winning streak to three games.

Sam McLain led off the third with a triple against Juan Jimenez (2-3) and scored on an Ericnardo Padilla ground out. One batter later, Omar Bramasco hit a solo home run, his 11th of the season, to give the WhiteWings a 2-0 lead.

The Broncos got an unearned run against Julian Williams (6-5) in the third when Pedro Lopez and Ivan Reyes singled to put runners on the corners with one out. Orlando Cruz followed with a fly out to right field that Ryan Fox fired into the infield to hold the runners. The throw got away, though, allowing Lopez to score to make it 2-1.

The Broncos tied it up in the fifth when Lopez led off with a double, moved to second on a ground out and scored on an Orlando Cruz single.

In the sixth, Randy Rosa and Arnoldo Ponce led off with single. Luis Ramos laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners over, setting up a Benny Cepeda RBI-single to make it 4-2.

Williams only recorded one more out, going five and two-thirds innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on 11 hits with one walk and two strikeouts.

The WhiteWings got one back in the seventh as Bramasco sinlged, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. After a Kevin Griffin walk, Ryan Fox popped up a 1-0 pitch into foul territory behind the plate. Catcher Ryan Kottke dropped the ball, extending the at-bat and allowing Fox to hit an RBI-single to make it 4-3.

Jimenez ended up giving up three runs on eight hits with five walks and seven strikeouts in six and two-thirds innings.

Brian Daly pitched a scoreless ninth for his fourth save.

The WhiteWings and Broncos play game two of this three game set tomorrow night at 7:30. Angel Cordero (1-1) is expected to face Jose Cordero (6-6).
