
Broncos Offense Goes Cold

June 24, 2009-Laredo, TX-After scoring 14 runs in yesterday's ballgame, the Laredo Broncos offense could only muster 1 as they lost to the Amarillo Dillas by a score of 10-1 at Veterans Field.
The Dillas would get on the scoreboard early as they scored 3 runs in the top of the 1st. Terrance McClain hit a 2 run double, and would later score on a fielder's choice by Stantrel Smith. That gave Amarillo a 3-0 lead. The inning could have been worse but Broncos' starter Travis Parker picked off 2 runners in the inning.
The Dillas would strike again in the top of the 3rd. Trent Lockwood connected on a 3 run home run, his 4th of the season. That home run would chase Broncos' starter Travis Parker from the game only lasting 2 1/3 innings. He gave up 6 runs on 5 hits, walked 4 and struck out 2. Jason Herman came into the game and got the next 2 outs, making the score 6-0.
The Broncos offense was held in check by the Dillas' starter Richard Jessup. The Broncos only managed 1 hit thru the first 5 innings of the game. Broncos' reliever Jason Herman pitched well keeping the Dillas off the scoreboard in his 2 2/3 innings of work allowing no hits. Edgar Soto came in for the Broncos to start the 6th.
The Broncos finally got to Dillas' starter Richard Jessup in the 6th inning. Jaime Morales led off with an infield single. Then with 1 out, OJ Garza walked moving Morales to 2nd. With Mario Mendez batting a passed ball was charged to Amarillo's catcher Brian Bueno, which advanced the runners to 2nd and 3rd. Mendez would then hit a sacrifice fly scoring Morales. Argelis Nunez then came up and was called out on strikes on a check swing by the umpire. Nunez not happy with the call ran out and argued with the umpire who ejected him. The run did get Laredo on the board as the score was now 6-1.
Amarillo would extend their lead in the top of the 7th inning. With runners on 1st and 2nd with no one out Terrance McClain reached on a fielding error by 3rd baseman Andres Santos which scored Andrew Wong from 2nd and advanced Carlos Figueroa to 3rd with McClain ending up at 2nd base. Then back to back rbi groundouts by Trent Lockwood and Stantrel Smith made the score 9-1.
The Broncos would threaten in the bottom of the 8th inning after Amarillo took out the starter Jessup and brought in Eric Smith. The Broncos had the bases loaded with 2 outs, but Anthony Bennett struck out to end the threat. The Dillas would tack on a run in the 9th, while Laredo would go quietly as they fell by a score of 10-1.
The Broncos scored 1 run on 7 hits and had 2 errors while the Dillas scored 10 runs on 9 hits and had no errors.
The Broncos are now 3-11 on the season while the Dillas are 9-5. The Broncos will next be in action Friday June 26th at Veterans Field as they play game 3 of a 4 game series against the Amarillo Dillas at 7:30.
