Brodie Merrill receives NLL weekly honor

January 17, 2007 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Portland Lumberjax News Release

PORTLAND, Jan. 17, 2007 - The National Lacrosse League (NLL) named Brodie Merrill "Transition Player of the Week" (Week Number Three) today after he helped the Portland LumberJax clinch a 14-12 road victory over the Philadelphia Wings on Jan. 13, 2007. In just two weeks of competition this season, the Jax have captured three Player of the Week awards.

In the Wachovia Center last Saturday night, Merrill collected 18 looseballs and scored four points off two goals and two assists. Despite the Wings' pulling their goalie for a six-on-five opportunity to tie the game at 13 with under a minute remaining, Merrill managed to collect a looseball and score an empty-net goal to secure the Jax win.

"When I collected that looseball I saw an opportunity to score on the empty net right away, and I knew the game was over if I could score right then and there," Merrill explained. "It's rewarding to see our hard work pay off, and we couldn't have done it without a good collective effort."

The weekly awards have been expanded this season to include Transition Player of the Week along with honors for Offensive, Defensive, Rookie and Overall Player of the Week. A transition player is a specialist who has an expanded role beyond the traditional forward or defenseman positions. A transitional player may be called upon to play both sides of the floor as well as orchestrate the transition between defense and offense. The Jax have been known for their strong transitional play since last season's opening game, led by efforts from players like Merrill.

Dallas Eliuk and Jed Prossner were both recognized for their contributions to the Jax 11-10 overtime win on Dec. 30, 2006 against the Buffalo Bandits. Veteran-goalie Eliuk took home the Defensive Player of the Week award while Prossner was named Rookie of the Week.
