Kansas City Brigade News Release
Duluth, Georgia - Jerel Myers and D Bryant did all they could to try and secure Kansas City's first win of the 2008 AFL season. Bryant, who made his AFL debut at quarterback, looked sharp in his first game under center for the Brigade. Kansas City started quickly and four plays into the game Bryant had already found wide receiver Jerel Myers for a touchdown and defensive back Jerald Brown returned a Chris Greisen interception for a touchdown. The Brigade would extend their lead to 21-0 with 7:41 still remaining in the first quarter. However, the Brigade would be outscored by 21 points from the 2nd quarter on.
Bryant's first game came with many positives but there were two glaring negatives. Two interceptions returned for touchdowns. Bryant, who was playing in his first game where the Jack linebacker can roam from sideline to sideline, was picked off twice by JLB Cam Newton. Newton returned both of the mistakes for touchdowns. Bryant finished the night 31 of 45 for 332 yards and seven total touchdowns with two interceptions. The 332 passing yards is a season high. One of Bryant's seven touchdowns was on the ground.
Bryant's main target was third-year wide receiver Jerel Myers. Myers set personal and team records in three categories. Myers, who is a former LSU Tiger, finished with 16 receptions (new career and franchise high), 168 receiving yards, (new career and franchise high) and four receiving touchdowns (tied personal best). Charles Frederick and Mike Horacek would combine for two touchdowns and 151 receiving yards. With five catches Mike Horacek moved into seventh place all time in AFL receptions with 837.
Georgia was led by quarterback Chris Greisen who threw for a game high seven touchdowns. Wide receivers Carl Morris and Tiger Jones totaled seven touchdown receptions and 229 yards receiving.
With the 70-63 loss the Kansas City Brigade fall to 0-5. Georgia evens their record at 3-3.
Next week the Brigade return to ESPN and Monday Night Football. Kansas City will host the Central Division leading Chicago Rush to Sprint Center on Monday the 14th. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 pm. ESPN2 will broadcast the game nation wide.
