Bridgeport Bluefish News Release
Bridgeport, CT- The Bridgeport Bluefish (17-14, 47-54) were defeated by the Sugar Land Skeeters (19-13, 54-48) 3-2 in 11 Innings at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Tuesday evening in the opener of a three-game midweek series in the Park City. Sugar Land improves to 5-3 when free baseball is played, while Bridgeport falls to 5-9, including a record of 3-5 at home. The Skeeters have now won both of the extra-inning games played btween the two balclubs in 2016 after also coming away with a 2-1 victory at Constellation Field on May 10th.
Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Ross Seaton registered a no-decision in his second start in a Bluefish uniform (both outings coming at home against the Skeeters), giving up two runs on four hits in five and two-thirds innings of work, walking three, striking out one and surrendering a home run. Sugar Land Starting Pitcher Roy Merritt also did not factor in the game's final outcome, allowing two runs (one earned run) on six hits in six innings pitched, walking and striking out one. Jimmy Patterson (1-4) was tagged with the loss, giving up one run on one hit in one and one-third innings of relief, striking out three and allowing a home run. Zech Zinicola (2-2) earned the win with a scoreless inning of relief out of the bullpen, striking out one. Derrick Loop closed the game out for the visitors picking up three ground ball outs to notch his 25th save of the season, third most in the Atlantic League.
Sugar Land got on the board quickly against Seaton with a two out rally in the top half of the first inning. After Delwyn Young drew a free pass, cleanup hitter Ricky Hague launched a two-run home run to left centerfield, his 15th roundtripper of the season and four batters into the ballgame the Skeeters led 2-0. Bridgeport answered back in the home half of the second against Merritt with a run of their own to cut the deficit in half at 2-1. Jose Cuevas led off the frame with walk, and with two outs crossed the plate when a ground ball hit by Luis Nunez went right through the legs of Hague for an error, getting the ¬ËFish to within a single run. Bridgeport would get even against Merritt in the bottom half of the fifth scratching across a run to knot the game up at two. Luis Nunez led off with the rally with a double. Anthony Giansanti followed with a beautiful sacrifice bunt to move the tying-run over to third base with one man out. Luis Hernandez would bring Nunez home with a sacrifice fly to centerfield, and the game was all square.
The battle of the bullpens took the contest to the top half of the 11th inning, and that was when Sugar Land took the lead for good. Patterson was in his second inning of work after striking out the side in the tenth. After the first three pitches were off the plate to start the frame, Skeeters skipper Gary Gaetti gave Jeremy Barfield the green light, and the gamble paid off as the right hander launched a go-ahead home run to left centerfield which proved to be the difference, his team-best 16th big fly of the season, tying him for second most in the Atlantic League. The Bluefish threatened in the bottom half of the 11th when Welington Dotel reached on Hague's second error of the game to lead things off. Pinch-runner Jonathan Galvez was in scoring position with two out, but Jose Gil grounded bounced out to second and the visitors hung on for the one-run victory as the Bluefish finished the game hitless in ten at bats with runners in scoring position. Burroughs led the way for Bridgeport with three hits.
