Bridgeport Bluefish News Release
(Bridgewater, NJ) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (15-28) defeated the Somerset Patriots (25-19) 4-1 at TD Bank Ballpark on Sunday afternoon to salvage the finale of a three game weekend series between Liberty Division foes. The Bluefish close out their brief three game road trip with a record of 1-2, winning for the first time in the Garden State this season.
Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Jimmy Patterson (1-1) collected his first victory of the 2016 campaign, tossing six innings, allowing just one run on six hits, walking one and striking out seven. The southpaw from Tempe, Arizona registered his fourth quality start in his last six appearances on the mound as he continues to play a significant role in the Bluefish starting rotation. Somerset Starting Pitcher Mickey Storey (1-3) was tagged with the loss after surrendering two runs on four hits while walking three and not striking out a batter in five innings of work. Taylor Thompson answered the bell in the ninth inning after suffering the walk-off defeat less than 24 hours before by firing a scoreless ninth inning to go along with a strikeout en route to his second save of the season.
Bridgeport took the early 2-0 lead off Storey in the top half of the fourth inning on a two out, two-run double off the bat of Anthony Giansanti, plating Jose Cuevas who opened the frame with a base knock of his own and Jonathan Galvez who reached on a one out free pass. Patterson then put up a zero in the home half of the fourth as he registered a much needed shutdown inning to preserve the lead. Somerset would cut the deficit in half off Patterson in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Mycal Jones, scoring Yovan Gonzalez who began the rally with a leadoff infield single. That brought up Eric Farris with runners at the corners and two men out, but Patterson was able to induce the outfielder to fly out to left and the 'Fish maintained a 2-1 cushion.
Clinging to a slim lead of just a single run, Bridgeport looked for some insurance in the eighth against the Patriots bullpen. With Connor Little on in relief, Galvez singled with one out and moved up into scoring position on a wild pitch. In stepped Josh Vitters, who was hitless in 11 at bats in the series. That would soon change as he laced an RBI double in the gap in left centerfield, driving home Galvez to make it 3-1 in favor of the Bluefish. In the top of the ninth, the visitors would score once again off Little as Endy Chavez drove home Luis Hernandez with a sinking line drive to centerfield just out of the reach of Trayvon Robinson, and just like that the 'Fish had their largest lead of the afternoon at 4-1. Hernandez singled and drew a walk in the victory, extending his on-base streak to a team-high 12 consecutive games. The Patriots had no comeback in them on this day as Thompson 'Reeled It In' for Bridgeport to give them a much needed victory and a relaxing bus ride back home to the Park City. Giansanti and Rossmel Perez led the offensive attack for the Bluefish with a pair of hits each.
Bridgeport returns to the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Tuesday, June 7th when they welcome in the Lancaster Barnstormers to kick off a three game series and a seven game homestand. First pitch is scheduled for 7:12 P.M. on Two Dollar Tuesday, where hot dogs will be just two dollars plus there will be another two dollar special at the concession stands.
